FifagaI recently purchased an Ikea Platsa cabinet system and am very satisfied with the flexible design and appearance. However, I am concerned about the surface, which is usually made of coated particleboard and can be quite sensitive.
My question is specifically: How can the surface of Ikea PLATSA furniture be best protected against scratches, especially with everyday use? Are there proven methods or special care products that do not damage the material but still maintain durability and appearance in the long term? Tips for removing small scratches are also welcome.
Thank you in advance for your advice!

Great topic you brought up! I really love the PLATSA system too, but when well maintained, it definitely looks like new for much longer. Here are a few tips from me:
- Avoid placing sharp objects directly on the surface.
- Use felt pads under decorations or appliances.
- For cleaning, I use a damp cloth with mild dish soap.
- When it comes to protection, you can also apply self-adhesive furniture protection films; they are transparent and provide good scratch protection!
These films have saved my day twice already because the laminate on the PLATSA doors tends to get small scratches quickly. Just give it a try! 😊

Hello Fifaga, your question is very well thought out, and I’m happy to go into detail to provide a thorough understanding. The surface of the Ikea PLATSA is usually made of melamine resin-coated particleboard. This coating offers some scratch resistance but is not invulnerable.
For protection, I recommend the following approach:
- First: Use pads made of felt, cork, or rubber under decorations, electronic devices, or other items with rough bottoms. This prevents hard materials from coming into direct contact with the surface.
- Second: You can use special hard wax polishes that protect the surface and hide minor scratches. Please make sure to choose a product that does not contain solvents, as these can damage the melamine coating.
- Third: Clean regularly with a damp microfiber cloth to avoid scratches caused by coarse dirt. For stubborn stains, avoid using abrasives or aggressive chemicals.
- Fourth: If small scratches do occur, I recommend repair markers or wax sticks in a matching color, which are available at woodworking or hardware stores.
May I ask in which room your PLATSA furniture is located and what the daily use looks like? That helps to tailor the advice even better.

May I ask which room your PLATSA furniture is in, and how it is used on a daily basis? This is an important question because the usage has a significant impact on the protection measures needed. For example, if the furniture is placed in a hallway or children’s room, where there is a lot of activity and wear from bags, shoes, or toys, the type of protection required differs greatly from furniture located in a quiet bedroom.
As a general recommendation, I always suggest:
- Surface protection with transparent films or decorative panels
- Protectors under points of stress or load
- Careful cleaning with soft cloths
One more tip for removing minor scratches: gently rub with special furniture wax sticks or color-matched repair kits available from specialist stores. Avoid pressing too hard, as this can cause stains.
If you like, please describe more specifically how the furniture is used, and I can give you more targeted advice!
