Hello everyone, I have a specific question regarding the care and protection of Ikea Metod countertops, especially when planning repair work in the kitchen. More precisely, I am interested in how to effectively protect these countertops from damage caused by tools, adhesive residues, or other materials during the repair process. Are there any proven methods, materials, or techniques that have been particularly gentle yet reliable in preventing scratches, discoloration, or other aesthetic and functional impairments? I am interested in both short-term protective measures for the duration of the repair and tips for long-term maintenance of the surface. Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions!

For protecting Ikea Metod countertops during repairs, I recommend the following practical steps: - Thoroughly clean and dry the countertop - Cover it with durable painter’s fleece or thick cardboard - Secure the edges additionally with painter’s tape - Always use small supports like wooden slats when handling tools - If working with adhesives, wipe off immediately with a damp cloth This helps prevent the most common types of damage.

Hello Lufra35, your question is very relevant since Metod countertops often consist of melamine-coated particle boards or similarly delicate surfaces that can be easily damaged. Here is a brief guide I often follow when repair work is needed:

- Prepare the work surface: First, clean the countertop thoroughly to ensure no dirt gets trapped under the protective covering.
- Covering: I always use strong painter’s fleece because it is durable and tear-resistant; alternatively, thick cardboard also works. Important tip: cover generously, especially in the areas where work will be done.
- Protect the edges: Especially with Metod panels, the edges are often vulnerable. I recommend painter’s tape or foam edge tape to keep the protective material from slipping and to provide extra edge protection.
- Handling tools: When working with screwdrivers or other hard tools, it’s best to place a wooden strip underneath as a spacer to avoid pressure marks.
- Adhesive residues and solvents: Always wipe off adhesive immediately and pay attention to the type of glue, as not all are melamine-friendly.

Summary: protective covering + edge sealing + careful use of tools = long-lasting preservation of the countertop during repairs. Hope that helps!

Exactly! I would add: Avoid placing heavy tools directly on the panel – that can quickly cause small dents or unsightly marks.

Also, if you want something really durable, a thick, smooth PVC sheet works well – it is water-repellent and also protects against potential glue stains.

You could almost think of it like a beauty treatment for the Metod panel. 😉 If you cover everything well, you can repair with peace of mind and save yourself a lot of trouble later on.
