Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Hemnes bed from Ikea, and I’ve noticed during daily use that unpleasant water stains form on the surface, especially in spots where I sometimes place a glass of water before going to bed. Unfortunately, the light-colored lacquered wood seems to be quite sensitive.
My question is: What is the best way to protect Ikea Hemnes furniture from water stains? Are there proven methods, care products, or preventative measures that work particularly well to prevent the wood surface from being permanently damaged or discolored?
I would appreciate concrete tips and possibly recommendations for suitable protective coatings or cleaning products!

To specifically prevent water stains on Ikea Hemnes furniture, a combination of prevention and regular maintenance is recommended:
- Always place coasters or felt pads under drinks and dripping items.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to immediately wipe up any spills.
- An additional treatment with a clear furniture wax or a protective varnish suitable for lacquered wood surfaces can enhance resistance to moisture exposure.
Important: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for care products, as unsuitable agents can damage the existing protective layer.
Preventive treatment is especially useful if the furniture is frequently used and complete avoidance of moisture contact is not possible.

I would like to add:
- Avoid using steam cleaners or very wet cleaning methods on the Hemnes series, as these can damage the wood and the lacquer finish.
- If some areas of the surface already show dull or rough spots, a special care wax for lacquered wood can help protect these areas again and improve water repellency.
Regular inspection and prompt removal of moisture are essential to prevent long-term damage.

- Always wipe up spills immediately when water is spilled.
- I also tried thin, transparent protective films for furniture that can be applied to the surface without significantly affecting its appearance.
- At the same time, I regularly treated the surface with special furniture wax.
It takes some patience and discipline, but after two years the surface still looks almost like new. However, if the stains have already penetrated the surface, sometimes only refinishing with a new coat of paint or varnish is truly effective.

Hey, great topic!
I really love my Hemnes bed as well, and I wanted to avoid water stains from the start. That’s why I always use absorbent coasters and make sure to wipe up any liquid immediately.
My tip: once or twice a year, treat the furniture with a special maintenance wax designed for lacquered wood. This preserves the surface and makes water simply bead off! That really makes a difference!
So keep at it and don’t get discouraged— with the right care, you can definitely prevent this!
