Hello everyone,

I recently bought some pieces from the IKEA Brimnes series, mainly the dressers and nightstands made of wood (or wood veneer). Since I use them mostly in the bedroom and living room, I’ve noticed that water stains develop quite quickly despite careful use – for example, from glasses with cold drinks or small water splashes.

I’m interested in how to best protect the wood of these furniture pieces from such water stains without damaging the surface or spending an excessive amount of effort. Are there specific care products, sealants, or practical everyday tips that work well for this? And what should generally be avoided to preserve the surface as long as possible?

I’m looking forward to your advice and experiences on the topic: “How to protect IKEA BRIMNES wood from water stains?”

Hey Kiarash, great question! I also really like the BRIMNES furniture, especially because of its clean look. 😍

Regarding your water stains: The most important thing is to generally avoid moisture on the surface. I always use small coasters under glasses or cups; it’s simple and provides a lot of protection!

IKEA also offers special furniture polish or care oils that help to impregnate the surface a bit and make it more water-resistant. Just apply a small amount every few weeks and gently rub it in. 👍

Another tip I like: use fine microfiber cloths for cleaning so you don’t scratch the surface. And wipe up any spills immediately – water stains only need a little time to soak in.

You’ve got this, your furniture will thank you! 💪🙂

Hello Kiarash,

I would like to provide a structured response here so that you and other readers can clearly understand the key points.

1. Understanding Surface Material:
BRIMNES often uses coated wood fiberboards (MDF or particleboard with a melamine coating). These are not solid wood and have a thin protective layer that is quite durable but not completely waterproof.

2. Why Do Water Stains Appear?
When liquid remains on the surface, it can seep in through microscopic cracks or edges. Especially cold glass causes condensation, which collects at the base.

3. Protective Measures in Detail:
- Use coasters or placemats to prevent direct liquid contact.
- Clean regularly with a slightly damp, but not wet, cloth.
- Avoid harsh cleaners that can damage the protective film.
- Use furniture wax or special impregnation products designed for melamine-coated surfaces (always test in an inconspicuous area first!).

4. Care and Cleaning Routine:
- Wipe daily or as needed with a microfiber cloth on frequently used furniture.
- Apply a polish suitable for melamine-coated surfaces once a month.

5. Mistakes to Avoid:
- Do not use overly wet cloths, as water can damage the edges of the woodboard.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or scouring pads.

Summary:
The most important step is to avoid standing water by using coasters and wiping up spills immediately. Supporting care with appropriate products works very well to protect the surface and make it more water-repellent.

If you like, I can also suggest some suitable polish products.

Good luck!

I agree with that, but I would like to add that the natural sensitivity of veneered furniture like BRIMNES also means you shouldn’t rely too much on sealants. Sometimes, frequent use of polishes or oils can create a kind of film that, over time, reduces the wood’s breathability and may cause other damage.

Coasters are definitely the first and best prevention, but I wonder if some users place too much trust in surface treatments without paying attention to basic handling and “hygiene” when dealing with moisture.

My recommendation is therefore: Along with using coasters and sparing maintenance products, always ensure good ventilation and avoid excessive humidity in the area, as this can also influence the development of stains.

Kiarash, what are the environmental conditions like in your home? Is the furniture in a room with high humidity or placed directly next to radiators/windows? These factors also play a role.
