Hello everyone, I need your expertise: How do you properly seal IKEA Metod sink cabinets? Specifically, I’m concerned about the area where the sink, countertop, and cabinet meet, as I want to reliably prevent water from entering the cabinet carcass and causing long-term moisture damage. I’ve heard of different methods – sealing tape, silicone, special sealing profiles – but I’m unsure which works best and lasts longest with Metod. Are there any proven materials or techniques that have been effective in everyday use? Tips on correct handling during sealing and what to watch out for would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

A well-planned waterproofing requires especially patient work. It is recommended to first apply the sealing tape precisely while the surface is completely clean and dry to ensure the best possible adhesion. Then, the sanitary silicone should be smoothed with a finishing tool to avoid gaps that could later absorb moisture. Also, make sure there is no draft, as this can affect the curing process. When choosing the silicone, be sure to consider mold resistance and adhesion to the materials used.

A common mistake is incorrectly applying the sealing tape, which then shifts when installing the sink.

Exactly, I recommend pressing the sealing tape firmly in place before installing the sink. There are sealing tapes with adhesive backing that make this easier.

The countertop should be fully covered directly underneath the sink to prevent water penetration.

I agree. Completely covering the contact surfaces helps prevent moisture damage later on.

Additionally, I recommend treating the cabinet interior with water-repellent lacquer after installation for Metod cabinets, if possible. This significantly increases the durability of the particleboard.

One last note: regularly check the sealed joints after sealing to ensure they remain intact, and renew the sealant as needed before major damage occurs.
