Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the cleaning of IKEA BILLY shelves, especially when it comes to stubborn stains. The shelves are basically made of coated particleboard, and I want to avoid damaging or dissolving the surface by using harsh cleaning products. Are there any proven methods or specific products that effectively remove stains such as ink, grease, or paint without using strong chemicals? Which cleaning techniques have worked well for you, particularly with stains that cannot be wiped off simply with a damp cloth? I’m looking forward to your practical tips and also any advice on what to definitely avoid in order not to ruin the shelf.

Hello, it is best to use a damp microfiber cloth with a mild dishwashing detergent. For stubborn stains, carefully try a small amount of rubbing alcohol, but not too often. Avoid aggressive cleaners or abrasive substances, as they will damage the surface.

Hello jerryna45, your question is very important because the material of the BILLY shelves can be sensitive to the wrong cleaning products. I recommend always starting with lukewarm water and a few drops of a mild, neutral dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe the surface.

For stubborn stains like ink or greasy marks, you can gently treat them with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol – but please use sparingly and only spot-clean. Always test this method first in an inconspicuous area to make sure the surface does not become dull or start to dissolve.

Also, be sure to avoid abrasive pads or stiff brushes, as they can scratch the surface. If you have paint stains that cannot be removed this way, a special laminate stain remover might be an option – but again, test it first in a hidden spot.

Good luck, feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Absolutely right! That’s brilliant! 🙂

I once removed stubborn ink stains using a little nail polish remover, but really very carefully and sparingly! The shelf looked like new afterward.

And another tip: Always wipe down well with clean water and dry immediately after cleaning to keep the surface in good condition. You’ve got this easily! :-)

All I can say is: patience and gentle methods are your best friends when it comes to BILLY shelves.

I once tried a mixture of water and a little vinegar, but very diluted – that helped with light discolorations without damaging the shelf. For grease stains, I’ve gotten used to putting a drop of dish soap directly on the stain, letting it sit gently, and then wiping very carefully with a damp cloth.

It sounds simple, but it often works great. And remember, it’s better to clean gently more often than to scrub too aggressively once. If the stain won’t come off, it’s safer to leave it than to risk damaging the surface. 😉 Good luck!
