Hello everyone,

I recently assembled two Ikea Brimnes cabinets and unfortunately noticed that one of them wobbles quite a bit whenever it is touched or lightly shaken. This happens despite proper assembly and securing to the wall according to the instructions.

My main question is: How can wobbling be prevented with Ikea Brimnes cabinets, especially when all the recommended wall fasteners have already been used?

I suspect it might be due to uneven flooring or the joints between the furniture parts not being completely stable during assembly. Do you have experience with additional reinforcements or materials (such as small wooden blocks, washers, or rubber pads) that effectively solve this problem with Brimnes cabinets?

Also, I would like to know if there are any other modifications to the assembly or installation that might help achieve optimal stability.

Thanks for all your tips and advice!

The most effective method is to securely screw the cabinets directly into the wall and additionally place small wedges or furniture gliders under the feet to compensate for uneven flooring.

That is very likely. The Brimnes wardrobe is not designed to carry heavy, permanent loads, so even small inaccuracies during assembly or an uneven floor can cause it to wobble. I would approach the process as follows:

- First, check the floor under the wardrobe with a spirit level and, if necessary, place small wooden or plastic wedges underneath.

- Then carefully inspect all the joints in the wardrobe: Are all dowels properly inserted? Are the screws tightened enough? The middle joints of the back panel especially tend to wobble if they are only loosely fitted.

- Check the back panel: Ikea usually uses thin particleboard as back panels, which are only fixed with nails. You can reinforce these with longer screws or additional battens to increase lateral stability.

- Finally, check whether the wall attachment is truly secure. Sometimes the wall anchors provided are not suitable for the wall type (drywall vs. concrete). Using a better anchor can work wonders here.

I’m curious whether you assembled the wardrobe with or without the supplied back panel? Sometimes the back panel is omitted, which significantly reduces stability.

To specifically prevent wobbling in Ikea Brimnes cabinets, I recommend the following systematic approach:

1. Floor leveling: First, check if the floor under the cabinet is even. You can correct unevenness using furniture shims made of wood or plastic. It is important that all the cabinet’s feet rest simultaneously and evenly.

2. Optimize wall attachment: Brimnes cabinets are usually fixed to the wall with simple nails and screws. Replace these with appropriate heavy-duty anchors and screws, especially if you have drywall (plasterboard). This significantly improves the connection.

3. Reinforce the back panel: Ikea uses thin particleboard for the back panel, which stabilizes the cabinet frame. If necessary, replace the thin back panel with a thicker wood or MDF board or strengthen it by adding extra battens on the inside to minimize twisting.

4. Check and tighten screws: Re-tighten all visible and hidden screws in the cabinet multiple times. Connections between side panels, shelves, and top panels are particularly critical, as they otherwise promote wobbling.

5. Secure connection points: Sometimes, adding small rubber buffers or felt pads at internal joints helps absorb stress permanently.

6. Follow the assembly instructions carefully: During assembly, make sure the drill holes are not damaged and that the parts sit flush against each other. Glue joints or leftover plastic protective films can sometimes cause unnecessary tight spots.

Finally, if possible, gently push the cabinet toward the wall before attaching the wall fasteners. This helps avoid small gaps.

I hope this helps. If you can provide more details about the wall condition or the floor, I can adjust the advice accordingly.
