Hello everyone, I am urgently looking for advice on how to effectively prevent warping of the wood in Malm furniture from IKEA. I have noticed that especially desks and dressers often have surfaces and individual components that slightly bow or warp, which is particularly noticeable with changing temperatures and humidity levels. Are there any specific care instructions, ideal humidity ranges, or installation techniques that can minimize this issue? I want to avoid the furniture deforming over time without having to replace it frequently. Perhaps you also have experience with additional protective measures or similar solutions. Thanks in advance for your help!

I additionally covered the underside of the furniture with a transparent protective film and haven’t had any warping since!

That sounds very practical. I would also recommend leveling the furniture with small wedges on uneven floors if necessary. This helps to prevent unnecessary stress on the wood.

Interesting and important points so far. I would like to add that, besides preventing moisture fluctuations, the assembly process is truly crucial. When dealing with Malm furniture, it is important not to overtighten screws, as this can cause stresses that promote warping. Even, careful assembly as described in the instructions is essential. To support this, dried wooden blocks or felt pads can be used to separate the furniture base from direct contact with the floor—this allows air circulation and reduces moisture penetration. If the furniture is placed in a basement, special care is necessary because humidity levels are often higher there. Finally, covering the furniture with glass or metal protects against moisture exposure and provides additional stability.
