Hello everyone,

I recently assembled some Ikea Hemnes furniture and noticed that the screws tend to loosen over time. The furniture is in my living room and is used regularly, but I want to avoid having to constantly retighten the screws or risk damage. My question is quite specific: How can one permanently prevent screws from loosening in Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially those with wooden dowel and screw connections? What methods or aids can be used without damaging the original furniture parts or requiring complex modifications?

I would appreciate any helpful tips, personal experiences, or technical explanations on this topic!

I’m curious: Which type of screw joints do you mainly use for your furniture? The flat head screws on the frame or the smaller connector screws on the sides?

Thanks for asking, Dilen. Most of the issues I have are with the flat wood screws that hold the main structure together, such as the connections between the side panels and the back panel or the upper crossbars. The smaller connector screws on the drawers generally perform well.

I’ve noticed that especially after the first few days of use, the large screws tend to loosen slightly, and eventually I can feel a creaking effect when moving the furniture. This concerns me because I did tighten them properly with torque.

It would be interesting to know how to keep these joints firmly tight over time without damaging the furniture. Using glue is theoretically an option for me if it helps.

Hello everyone,

When discussing "How to prevent screws from loosening in Ikea Hemnes furniture," it is important to consider the mechanical properties of the wood and the flexibility of the joints.

Allow me to share a few practical tips:

- First, always check if the screw holes in the area mentioned by Okanlu (side panels to the back panel) are worn out. If so, wood glue mixed with wooden dowels or wood shavings can help reinforce the material.

- After tightening: Wait several hours up to a day to allow the wood to settle under load. Then retighten the screw connections.

- Use medium-strength threadlocker (such as Loctite or similar) to secure the screws. When applying, be careful that the adhesive does not spread onto the furniture surface.

- For Hemnes furniture, it is often helpful to replace the flat-head screws with slightly longer or thicker screws, as long as the construction allows.

- A small additional washer made of plastic or metal can help reduce the screw turning against the wood.

- If available, use spring washers to maintain constant tension. These can absorb movement that causes loosening.

- Important: Always apply the correct torque when tightening, for example, by using a torque wrench.
