Hello everyone,

I have a specific question that will likely concern many parents or households with children: How do you prevent kids from lifting the IKEA KALLAX unit?

I’m asking because I know the KALLAX shelf system is relatively lightweight, and small children could try to lift or even tip it over. My concern is not only about stability but especially safety, as the furniture could fall.

I’m interested in what methods or measures you use to ensure this—whether it’s additional fastenings, special tricks, or recommendations that IKEA might not mention upfront.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Are there any special brackets that you or others would particularly recommend?

I recommend buying heavy-duty wall brackets or strong corner connectors. The standard brackets are often too weak.

Also, the screws should definitely go deep into the wall—not just into the drywall.

Additionally, a non-slip pad can help.

This is great—so many tips are already coming together here! 🙂 I want to encourage you not to give up, because even small safety measures can work wonders.

I have a similar issue and secured the KALLAX shelf to the wall using special tie-down straps designed specifically for child safety. Basically, it’s a kind of securing strap that holds the furniture firmly in place.

This gives me peace of mind since the straps are more flexible than rigid brackets but still provide strong support.

Don’t get discouraged—often just a few small adjustments make everything much safer. It immediately feels more relaxing!

Quick tip: If the shelf is placed on a carpet, the risk of tipping is higher because the carpet can slip and the furniture does not have full contact with the floor.

It is better to secure it on a solid, level floor or use anti-slip pads. This greatly improves stability.

Wall mounting plus an anti-slip mat and storing large, heavy items at the bottom. That’s how I did it – no problems since.

A shelf on a carpet can wobble, so better to avoid that.

Clamps only hold if they are properly fastened; otherwise, they don’t help.

Straps are interesting, but I wonder if the constant tension might eventually strain the material or furniture? I tend to prefer a very solid hold.

That is definitely a point that should not be underestimated. Carpets are cozy, but unfortunately they often compromise furniture stability.

What I sometimes wonder is: How much safety do we really need? Children also become smarter in handling furniture through small experiences, and excessive safety measures sometimes simply take away their chance to learn playfully.
