Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring how to give IKEA Brimnes furniture a new, personalized look through DIY methods. My idea is to enhance simple pieces like dressers or bed frames to match one’s personal style—without needing extensive carpentry skills or rebuilding the furniture from scratch. I am particularly interested in which materials (e.g., paints, laminates, handles) work best, how to achieve a clean finish that lasts, and whether there are specific techniques that are especially recommended. Maybe someone has already done DIY projects with BRIMNES or knows practical tips for making the relatively neutral, standard design more exciting. I would appreciate any advice or ideas, including comments on effort and durability. How can IKEA BRIMNES furniture be given a new look through DIY?

I often find the classic "sanding and painting" approach overrated, especially with inexpensive plastics like those used in BRIMNES.

That is true to some extent, as Brimnes furniture is often made from lacquered wood-based panels or laminated materials, where thorough sanding can damage the surface. Alternatively, specific bonding primers for smooth surfaces are suitable before applying paint.

A professional approach would be:
- Cleaning the surface
- Applying a bonding primer
- Painting with acrylic or chalk paint
- Selecting and installing new handles

This ensures a professional and long-lasting result.

For long-lasting results, I recommend adhesive films specifically designed for furniture. They are easy to apply and can be removed without residue if you want a different style later. Painting can be challenging with BRIMNES if it is not properly primed.

Thank you for the clear instructions; they are very helpful, especially the tip about the adhesion primer.

I would also be interested if anyone has practical advice on choosing suitable handles: What should be considered when buying metal handles, for example? Are there differences in fastening methods or materials that work better for BRIMNES?

And: Can the existing plastic handles be simply removed, or is there anything special to keep in mind to avoid damaging the front? Any experience is welcome.
