Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific problem and hope to get some good advice here: The doors on a Billy shelf keep squeaking when opened and closed. These are the simple white doors with hinges, like those offered by Ikea. The noise is quite annoying; it’s a squeaky, scraping metal-on-metal sound that probably comes from the hinges or possibly from the fastenings.
I want to eliminate the noise permanently and would like to know which repair or maintenance steps are most effective. Is it enough to oil the hinges, or is it better to tighten the screws or even replace the entire hinges?
It would also be helpful to know which lubricant works best to ensure the squeaking really stops and doesn’t leave any dirt or residue.
Thanks in advance for any useful tips and experiences!

usually, it helps to treat the hinges with some silicone spray or a special hinge oil. Just spray on and open and close a few times, and the squeaking should stop. You can also tighten the screws beforehand, which can help if the hinge is no longer properly seated.

I’m familiar with your issue and would like to offer a more detailed response: squeaky doors on Billy-style shelving units are often caused by dry hinges or slight misalignment of the door.
First, I recommend gently tightening the hinge screws—be careful not to overtighten, as this can cause warping. After that, apply a lubricant to the hinges. Silicone spray is highly recommended because it doesn’t become sticky or attract dirt particles like oil often does.
It’s important not to spray the lubricant directly onto the furniture surface, as this can cause stains; instead, spray carefully only onto the metal parts. After applying, open and close the door several times to allow the lubricant to penetrate all moving components thoroughly.
If the squeaking persists, it’s worth inspecting the hinges themselves: sometimes they are worn or bent, and replacing them with new hinges (such as those from Ikea, which are relatively inexpensive and easy to install) may be necessary.
If you’d like, I can provide a step-by-step guide on how to replace the hinges. Just let me know if you need that!
Good luck!

I really like silicone spray because it lasts a long time and doesn’t get dirty! Just spray a little, and the squeaky doors feel like new. Applying it is fun too since you can see the annoying squeaks disappear right away.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try carbon spray; it works great for really stubborn doors!
Just don’t give up—you’ll get it, I promise! 🙂
