Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Billy shelves. The hinges squeak when opening and closing the doors, which is quite annoying over time. I suspect it’s due to lubrication or the mechanism, but I’m not entirely sure.
My question is: What is the best way to fix squeaky Billy hinges without affecting their function or appearance?
Are there specific lubricants that work well, or might some parts need to be replaced?
I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences, preferably with a brief guide or procedure so I can fix the issue permanently.

I agree with the general advice: silicone spray is ideal for this. I have had very good experiences with it on my Billy hinges in the past.
Be a bit patient when applying the lubricant, as the squeaking often only stops completely after a few opening and closing cycles.
If the problem persists, you can also check if the hinges are damaged or bent. In that case, replacing them is usually the best solution.

A small addition: Sometimes it helps to lightly clean the hinge pin or axle with fine sandpaper or a wire brush before applying the lubricant.
This removes any remaining residue and allows for better lubrication. Be careful not to scratch or damage the metal while doing this.

A question for Duixkar: Have you ever removed the hinges for cleaning, or do all the doors squeak in the same way?
Sometimes the problem is due to a worn plastic bushing inside the hinge, which cannot be fixed by cleaning and lubrication.

Have you ever removed the hinges during cleaning, or do all the doors squeak the same way?Thank you for the suggestion. So far, I have not removed the hinges. The squeaking occurs on two out of five doors. I will first try cleaning and lubricating them and, if necessary, remove the affected hinges to inspect the plastic bushings more closely.
The tips about silicone spray are very helpful; I will be happy to share the results.
If lubrication and cleaning don’t help, also check if the hinges are properly aligned. Sometimes a dent in the wood or a slight deformation causes pressure that leads to squeaking.
Otherwise, as mentioned before, a common mistake is using too much lubricant or the wrong type. PTFE spray on dry joints and regular maintenance is ideal.
