Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to know how to effectively extend their durability. I understand that the material and assembly play a major role, but I would like to learn more about proven methods to improve stability and longevity. Are there any specific care tips, better installation techniques, protective measures against moisture, or load recommendations that should be considered? Specifically, what steps can be taken to make a BILLY shelf as stable and sturdy as possible so that it remains undamaged and functional for as long as possible? Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

Hello plo59,

First of all, it’s a good approach to specifically improve the durability of the BILLY shelves! These shelves are basically designed for everyday use, but there are definitely ways to extend their lifespan.

The most important factor is correct assembly. Make sure that all dowels and screws are tightly secured – nothing should wobble, as stress on loose parts significantly reduces durability. Always attach the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping; this also reduces the load on the shelves.

Regarding moisture: if your shelf is in a room with higher humidity—such as a kitchen or basement—I recommend adding additional moisture protection to the back panel, for example with clear varnish or a special impregnation treatment. BILLY shelves made of particleboard do not tolerate permanent moisture well, as they will swell.

If you store heavy or uneven loads, distribute the weight evenly across the shelves, avoid overloading the unit, and do not place extremely heavy items on a single shelf.

Another option is to reinforce the shelves with special supports, such as metal brackets fixed underneath the shelf edge, especially when bearing a lot of weight.

I hope this helps! If you have specific questions about assembly, feel free to ask.

Hello plo59,

I would like to expand on klo61’s answer a bit, as there are many small details that together have a significant impact on the durability of a BILLY bookshelf.

1. Material protection: The BILLY bookshelves are mainly made of particleboard, which is naturally sensitive to moisture. It is advisable to treat the inner sides and especially the back panel with a synthetic clear varnish or a thin glaze to seal the surface and prevent moisture penetration.

2. Assembly precision: Screws and dowels should be inserted using the appropriate tools without over- or under-tightening. Some screws tend to damage the particleboard if too much force is applied. A cordless drill with adjustable torque is helpful here. Also, the back panel should be straight and firmly seated, as a slightly warped back panel can destabilize the shelf.

3. Load distribution and weight limits: IKEA usually specifies a maximum load capacity for the shelves, often around 30 kg per compartment. This should not be exceeded, as the particleboard can sag under load. For heavy loads, the shelves can be reinforced with thin metal strips or small wooden brackets.

4. Climate and location: A dry, climate-controlled room is ideal. Extreme temperature fluctuations and humid air cause material swelling and, in the worst case, damage.

5. Reinforcements: For increased stability of the shelves, metal brackets or sturdy reinforcement plates can be installed. When attaching the bookshelf to the wall, be sure to use all recommended screws and dowels, even if the shelf sometimes appears stable without them.

That is really key.

I would be interested to know which room you want to place the shelf in – that might allow for further tips.

For simple storage in living spaces, the shelves hold up very well, but moisture or uneven floors often cause problems.

Looking forward to your response!

Hey plo59 and all other shelf fans here! 🙂

I think the BILLY shelves are pretty great, but of course – without proper care, they won’t last forever. What helped me a lot is actually quite simple: I put small felt pads under the feet of the shelves so they don’t sit directly on the floor and therefore absorb less moisture from the ground.

Also, from time to time, I spray the wood with a furniture care spray, which protects against dust and keeps small scratches from being so noticeable for long.

One more tip: if you want to move the shelves, it’s better to lift them rather than drag them, otherwise the feet or side edges could get damaged.

I agree with that – it doesn’t mean you have to climate-control the shelves specifically, but regular ventilation and heating helps a lot.

That way, your shelf basically gets a little wellness treatment 😉

I hope you find the perfect way to care for your BILLY! :-)
