Hello everyone,

I am currently researching how to extend the lifespan of the Malm furniture surface finish from IKEA.

Specifically, I am interested in the surface treatment of Malm furniture, which usually has a painted or melamine-coated surface.

I have read that mechanical impacts, UV exposure, and moisture can negatively affect the surfaces. I would like to know which care and cleaning methods are truly effective in keeping the finish looking like new for as long as possible.

Are there certain cleaning products that should definitely be avoided? How often should the furniture be cleaned, and with what materials?

Additionally, I am curious if protective films are useful or if anyone has experience with particular care products that help extend the surface protection.

Thanks in advance for all tips and advice!

To extend the lifespan of the Malm furniture finish, regular and gentle cleaning is essential.

Use a damp microfiber cloth without harsh cleaning agents or abrasives.

Strong chemicals, alcohol, or solvents can permanently damage the protective coating.

Direct sunlight should be avoided or at least minimized, as UV radiation can fade and make the surface brittle.

Protective films are generally not necessary but can be useful in areas subject to heavy wear.

Additionally, I recommend wiping up any spilled liquids immediately to prevent damage.

This is a crucial point. Additionally, when caring for the Malm finish, avoid placing hot objects directly on the furniture, as extreme heat can damage the lacquer layer.

I also recommend not using coarse sponges or brushes, as they can cause scratches. For occasional cleaning, lukewarm water with a mild dish soap is completely sufficient.

Furthermore, the best way to protect the furniture is to clean it regularly to prevent dust and dirt buildup before these abrasive particles can damage the surface.

Also: Do not use harsh cleaners.

Simply clean with a damp cloth and dust regularly.

Remove stains quickly to prevent them from setting.

In addition to the points mentioned, I strongly recommend avoiding cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, or acetate-based substances. These can damage coatings or cause uneven yellowing.

Oils or wax-based products are also not suitable for lacquered Malm surfaces, as they may lead to discoloration and buildup of layers.

Dusting every 1 to 2 weeks is sufficient; thorough cleaning only when necessary. Microfiber cloths or soft cotton cloths are ideal.

Always dry quickly and thoroughly after any moisture to prevent swelling.
