ᐅ What is the most effective way to clean BILLY shelves, especially for stubborn stains?

GANONHello everyone,
I have a few BILLY shelves from IKEA that have been around for several years. Recently, persistent stains have appeared on them, partly caused by spilled drinks or grease from kitchen items. I am interested in how to clean BILLY shelves most effectively without damaging the material or risking unsightly discoloration.
Are there any special cleaning products or home remedies that have proven particularly effective? And what is the best approach if the stains have been ignored for a longer time and have basically set in? I want the cleaning to be as thorough but gentle as possible.
I would appreciate any tips that are also suitable for older shelves!

Hello GANON,
First of all, great that you described the issue in such detail; it really makes it easier to help! BILLY shelves are usually made of particleboard with a foil coating. This means you should definitely avoid harsh cleaners as they can damage the surface.
For stubborn stains, I recommend the following approach:
1. Slightly moisten the area with clean water and use a soft cloth to loosen surface dirt.
2. Dissolve a mild dish soap in water and gently treat the stains with a soft sponge. Make sure the cloth is not too wet to avoid swelling the particleboard.
3. For tough stains—such as grease or absorbed drinks—a mixture of vinegar and water (three parts water, one part white vinegar) can help. To prevent damage, test this first on a small, inconspicuous spot.
4. For especially stubborn stains, a cleaning sponge like a "magic eraser" or a simple rubber eraser can be used, but rub gently to avoid dulling the surface.
5. Always wipe down with clean water at the end and dry thoroughly!
I hope this helps. If you want to try anything, just let me know—I’m happy to help you apply it correctly :-)

Hello GANON,
I would like to add to Takutau’s tips and offer you a simple step-by-step guide to achieve really good results:
1. Preparation: Remove all items from the shelf and lightly vacuum the surface if needed to get rid of dust and crumbs.
2. Pre-cleaning: Use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth to moisten the area broadly. This will also help remove surface dirt.
3. Stain treatment: For different types of stains:
- Grease stains: Use a few drops of dish soap in warm water. Let it sit briefly, then gently rub.
- Dried-on liquids: Try a damp cloth with vinegar water, as Takutau described.
- Stubborn marks: A sponge cloth combined with a melamine sponge (Magic Eraser) can work wonders. Always test first in an inconspicuous spot.
4. Rinse: Wipe all treated areas again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any cleaning product residue.
5. Drying: Use a dry cloth to thoroughly dry the surface. The particleboard must not remain wet too long, as it can swell.
6. Protection: Optionally, you can apply a furniture care product at the end that seals and protects the surface, but this is a matter of personal preference.
Summary:
is a great tip that I can only confirm. It’s always important to proceed as gently as possible and test first in a corner.
If you have specific types of stains, feel free to write, and I can help you more precisely.

Hello GANON!
Your question is really important, because proper cleaning significantly extends the lifespan of the BILLY shelves! 🙂
The most important thing is to avoid scrubbing too aggressively (otherwise the surface and color can be damaged). In my experience, vinegar water works best – it’s a real miracle for dried, stubborn stains! Be sure to test it first and then treat the stain patiently several times. I once read:
I can only confirm this, so always make sure to wipe it dry afterward!
And if nothing else works, try using a very soft eraser on the stain; this allows you to target stains without wetting the entire surface.
Good luck cleaning your shelves! It’ll definitely turn out great 🙂
