Niku67Hello everyone, I recently took a closer look at my IKEA BILLY bookshelf and I’m wondering what the best way to clean it is without damaging the material or affecting the surface.
Since the bookshelf is made of particleboard with a thin melamine coating, I want to avoid using harsh cleaning agents. Are there any special tips or proven methods to effectively remove dust, stains, or minor dirt without opening the pores or causing the material to swell?
Maybe someone has experience with suitable cleaning products or practical home remedies that are gentle on the bookshelf.
Thanks in advance for your helpful advice!

If you want to clean the shelf, please keep the following points in mind:
1. Regularly remove dust with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent scratches.
2. For stains, a slightly damp cloth with a few drops of mild, pH-neutral dish soap solution is usually sufficient. It is important to wring the cloth well to avoid liquid seeping into the edges.
3. Avoid scouring agents, bleach, or alcohol-based cleaners, as they can damage the melamine foil.
4. After wiping, carefully dry the surface with a dry cloth so no moisture remains, as this can cause the particleboard underneath to swell.
If the dirt is particularly stubborn, you can try gently using a melamine foam sponge (e.g., a magic eraser), but always test it first on an inconspicuous spot.
By the way: Are there specific types of stains (e.g., adhesive residue, grease stains, or ink) that are especially problematic? That could help provide more targeted advice.

I think it’s really important not to underestimate the material – a BILLY is a real workhorse, but it’s not an industrial product. 🙂
I can only agree with that. My tip: For everyday cleaning, I like to use a spray of clear water with a little mild dish soap, plus a microfiber cloth. Then wipe everything dry thoroughly – this way, nothing freezes in, and the shelf stays nice.
If you have something tougher, like grease, a little dish soap with warm water works better than harsh chemicals. And always follow up by drying with a towel, otherwise you get ugly water spots.
The main thing is to never leave the piece soaking wet. Chipboard doesn’t like that – it swells quickly.
Oh, and for dusting in between: A feather duster or soft-bristle duster is really handy. No hassle and no damage! 😉
