ᐅ What is the best way for two people to assemble Ikea HEMNES furniture?

GE_DUHello everyone,
I am currently working on a project to assemble IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces such as dressers, shelves, or nightstands as efficiently and sensibly as possible with two people. My specific question is: what strategies or ways of dividing the work make assembling these items with two people most effective and least stressful, especially considering some parts can be quite bulky or heavy? Does anyone have proven tips for handling the components, the assembly process, or the workflow (preparing screws, sorting parts, etc.)?
I am particularly interested in points like:
- How is it best to divide the tasks? Who should take on which roles?
- Are there specific preparation steps that are better done beforehand?
- Is it better to have all the tools ready at the start, or to find them as needed during assembly?
I would be very grateful for any helpful experiences or little “tricks.” I want to keep the process as smooth and pleasant as possible to avoid wasting unnecessary time.
Thank you in advance for your support!

What strategies or divisions of work make assembling together most efficient and least stressful, especially considering some of the rather bulky or heavy individual parts?Hello GE_DU,
you’ve asked a very good and precise question. To assemble Ikea HEMNES furniture like a dresser effectively with two people, I recommend thoroughly reading the assembly instructions beforehand and organizing the parts well. This helps avoid constant searching and unnecessary passing of parts back and forth.
- Preparation: Sort all screws, dowels, and parts by type and place them in small containers.
- Division of tasks: One person holds/positions the parts while the other screws them together. This makes handling large elements much easier.
- Communication is important: Agree on who will do what before each step.
- Tools: Get a reliable cordless drill with the right bits, but also have an Allen key available—many HEMNES parts are fastened with these.
Stay calm and plan your steps together. It also makes sense to assemble the furniture on a soft surface to prevent scratches.
Good luck!
Hey GE_DU and everyone else!
I think it’s great that you’re tackling this together! 😄 When assembling HEMNES furniture, it’s really helpful to take a moment before starting to decide who’s better at screwing and who’s responsible for holding and sorting the parts. I always recommend having all your tools ready to go, including a hammer, screwdriver, and that small wrench often included. And very important: patience! The shelves or doors sometimes hang a bit off, so adjusting them together makes a big difference.
Oh, and one more thing: when you have heavy parts, it’s better to carry them to the installation spot together. This way everything is ready, and you avoid unnecessary moving around.
Go for it, you’ve got this! 💪

Hello GE_DU,
I would like to briefly organize my contribution, as assembling HEMNES often involves the same common pitfalls, and it helps to be aware of them in advance:
1. Prepare your workspace:
- Choose a sufficiently large and preferably clean room with enough space to lay out all the parts.
- Soft surfaces prevent scratches.
2. Sort and prepare materials:
- Roughly sort the furniture parts according to the instructions.
- Store small items like screws, dowels, and similar components in small bowls.
- Have your tools ready (Allen keys, screwdrivers, cordless drill with appropriate bits).
3. Divide the work:
- One person holds the parts (e.g., side panels, back panels), while the other screws them together.
- Alternate screwing in to increase stability and reduce stress.
4. Avoid common mistakes:
- Never tighten screws too much to prevent splitting.
- Attach the back panels last to make fitting easier.
In summary: patience and a good plan are essential. Following these points will save you a lot of frustration.
Best regards

Hello everyone,
I would like to build on Jensson’s structured tips and add some advice on the typical planning when assembling HEMNES furniture with two people:
- First, it is recommended to discuss the individual steps of the assembly instructions together. This helps clarify who will take on which task at what time.
- For parts that are usually heavy or large—such as side panels or large shelves—one person should always hold them steady. Especially with wooden parts that have grooves or slots, this prevents slipping.
- Start by assembling the smaller screw rails and connections so that the piece of furniture is more stable later on.
- Work calmly; it is better to complete each step properly than to have to fix mistakes afterward.
Also, be careful not to overtighten the screws to preserve the wood and avoid damage.
I hope this helps!
