Hello everyone,

I recently bought a white Kallax shelf from Ikea and am very frustrated with the many fingerprints and stains that appear on it quickly and are unfortunately quite visible. I am especially interested in how you manage to keep the white Kallax as fingerprint-free as possible – that is, which products, methods, or surface treatments you use to minimize these unwanted marks. I’m already familiar with the usual advice involving cleaning cloths, but perhaps you have special care products, home remedies, or protective films that really help. It would also be interesting to know if certain habits when using the shelf help prevent fingerprints from happening in the first place.

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

At this point, I would also critically question whether and how realistic the goal is to keep the surface completely fingerprint-free. White high-gloss or similar surfaces tend to show fingerprints quickly because the contrasts are very noticeable.

Surface coatings might help but often change the appearance, which not everyone likes. Additionally, fingerprints sometimes appear less because of dirt itself, and more due to light reflection on micro-scratches or matte spots.

Therefore, my advice would be to adjust expectations regarding complete fingerprint-free surfaces and instead focus on regular cleaning and preventive protection. I have not found a permanent protective film that fully seals the surface practical for home use so far.

I would also be interested to know if you use the shelf as a storage surface (e.g., cups, plates), as dirt tends to accumulate even faster there than just from touch.

Are there actually alternatives to the white Kallax with more durable surfaces? That could also be important to consider.
