Hello everyone,

I recently bought a white Kallax shelf from Ikea and am very frustrated with the many fingerprints and stains that appear on it quickly and are unfortunately quite visible. I am especially interested in how you manage to keep the white Kallax as fingerprint-free as possible – that is, which products, methods, or surface treatments you use to minimize these unwanted marks. I’m already familiar with the usual advice involving cleaning cloths, but perhaps you have special care products, home remedies, or protective films that really help. It would also be interesting to know if certain habits when using the shelf help prevent fingerprints from happening in the first place.

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

I regularly wipe my Kallax white surface with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and then use a dry cloth afterwards. This effectively removes fingerprints without new ones settling quickly. In my opinion, that is all that is needed.

Hello Miman,

To avoid fingerprints on white Kallax units, I recommend a multi-step approach: First, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned. I use a mild dish soap diluted in water and a soft cloth that does not cause micro-scratches. Make sure the cloth is well wrung out, as too much moisture can damage the particleboard-like surface.

After the surface has dried, I apply a clear protective film based on matte or glossy PVC. This film is flexible, resists fingerprints, can be easily cleaned, and is also replaceable. Applying it requires some patience to cut it precisely.

Alternatively, there are special furniture waxes or wax pastes that create a dirt-repellent, slightly water-resistant layer. I recommend testing such products on an inconspicuous spot first, as some can cause slight clouding of the surface.

Finally, it is important to minimize contact with greasy or wet fingers in daily use, for example through frequent hand washing or careful handling.

Where do you mainly use your Kallax? Is it frequently touched, or does it primarily serve as a storage shelf? That will help me with further recommendations.

Good question! My Kallax is located in the living room next to the sofa and is often touched during the day because drinks are frequently placed there and games are unpacked on it. So, it is a surface that is used often, which probably makes the issue worse.

I find this really interesting! 🙂 I had the exact same problem with my white Kallax because I often touched it with greasy hands. For me, it helped a lot to regularly use a mild all-purpose cleaning spray and then thoroughly dry it with a microfiber cloth – this made the smudges disappear much faster.

Additionally, I bought rolls of stickers to protect the frequently touched corners a bit. I know it doesn’t look perfect, but it reduces the number of messy fingerprints. Give it a try! :-)

Hello Miman,

I completely understand your frustration, as white surfaces often attract fingerprints easily. What is often overlooked is that the cleaning method is more important than the product itself. I would recommend avoiding overly aggressive cleaning agents, as these can make the surface dull or brittle, which can actually encourage fingerprints to stick.

A tip from me: use a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with some distilled water. Wipe the surface with it, then immediately dry it with a second dry microfiber cloth to avoid any water residue. The smoother the surface, the harder it is for fingerprints to show.

You might also consider protecting the most frequently used areas with a matte-transparent self-adhesive film. This can be removed without leaving any residue and reduces the visibility of fingerprints. This is especially practical in the living room where the furniture gets a lot of use.

I can also recommend applying a small amount of wax or sealing paste, but only if you don’t mind a slight change in the texture.

If you have any more questions about cleaning, just let me know! I’m happy to help.
