Hello everyone, I have a question that’s been challenging me with my project involving the IKEA Brimnes drawer cabinet: How do you access the drawer slides on the Brimnes drawers to either clean or replace them? I’ve noticed that although the drawers seem very sturdy, when the slides get stuck or don’t run smoothly anymore, opening and closing becomes difficult. Unfortunately, I can hardly find any helpful information from IKEA or in the instructions on how to properly reach or remove the slides without damaging the entire unit. Maybe someone knows the exact procedure to make the slides accessible, or can offer tips on how to safely take them out? It would be great if someone with experience could share some advice!

Hello Maiate, your concern is definitely valid, and I have often worked with Brimnes units before. The drawer slides in IKEA Brimnes are indeed not directly visible, as they are installed internally on the sides of the drawers. To access them, I recommend the following steps, which have proven effective:

- First, fully pull out the drawer and then carefully lift it, since many Brimnes drawers are secured with a click mechanism that can be released with a little pull.

- Be cautious during this process, as the slides are often held in place with small plastic clips.

- Once the drawer is out, you can tilt it sideways to reach the slides. On some models, they can also be released via a small unlocking mechanism—usually a plastic lever or clip on the inside of the slide.

- Take your time with this step, as hesitation or force when removing can cause breakage.

- If you are not familiar with these connectors, it may help to fully remove the drawer and carefully disengage the slides on the inside using a screwdriver or a small lever.

I’m curious: is your Brimnes the version with glass fronts, or the standard wooden doors? This can slightly affect the removal process, since the glass parts are mounted differently. I hope this already helps you. I can also provide more detailed advice on specific steps if needed.

Hello Maiate, I would like to add to Domau0’s explanation and provide you with a simple step-by-step guide on how to properly access and remove the drawer slides on the IKEA Brimnes drawers:

- Step 1: Slowly and completely pull out the drawer. Usually, you will feel slight resistance because a locking plastic clip is engaged.

- Step 2: Press the small plastic tab on the side of the drawer (usually inside the slide on the drawer body). This will allow you to detach the drawer from the slides.

- Step 3: While pulling, lift the drawer slightly and then pull it out completely. The drawer should come free from the frame this way.

- Step 4: Now you can see the slides inside the furniture and, if needed, use a screwdriver to check the mounting holes. They are usually secured with small screws.

- Step 5: Unscrew the slides if you want to replace them or perform a thorough cleaning.

Note: IKEA typically uses plastic gliders and screws that can easily break or lose their function. Avoid using excessive force.

I can only confirm that – it requires a precise balance of leverage and feeling. If you encounter unexpected resistance, better double-check if there is an additional fastener somewhere.

I also recommend taking a photo of the drawer’s current position before removal – this helps you keep track and reassemble the slides correctly later.

If needed, I can also provide detailed tips on how to reduce sliding noise with simple maintenance methods without fully removing the drawer.

Simply pull the drawer fully out, press the side clip lock, then lift the drawer straight up and remove it. The drawer slides are secured with screws that are visible from the inside. After that, you can clean or replace the slides.

Hello Maiate, I’d like to add that it is important to completely unload the drawer before disassembly, meaning you should remove all items. This helps prevent unnecessary damage or misalignment when taking it out. Also, a tip: using a small screwdriver, you can often release the clips on the drawer slides more easily and gently than with your fingers.

I can only agree with that. Patience is key here. If you proceed carefully and slightly lift the drawer first, you can remove it from the slides without damaging the mechanism.

If you want to clean the drawer slides, I recommend removing them first. Dust and small debris tend to accumulate there and cause them to run unevenly. Afterwards, often just a drop of silicone oil on the slides is enough to make them run smoothly again.

If you encounter any problems, feel free to reach out again—I’ll help you step by step!
