Gitta56-12 Oct 2012 17:20I am currently renovating our house and want to replace the flooring in the hallway. I have already removed the old carpet and now plan to install laminate flooring over the flat subfloor. However, my hallway has seven doors, and the wooden door frames are quite intricate. I’m wondering how professionals cut the laminate planks so that they fit precisely around the door frames. I don’t really know how to measure or transfer the shape onto the plank. How do the experts do this?

When it comes to fitting around the door, in new builds the floor covering is installed first, and then the door frames are fitted. That way, it looks perfect. In an older building, installing floor coverings requires a lot of experience, especially when adjusting to angles, corners, etc. – this is something that can hardly be learned from instructions.

Hi Gitta,
Although I am also a beginner when it comes to installing laminate flooring, I solved the problem using homemade templates made from thin cardboard. The piece of cardboard should be rectangular. Then you place it exactly against an already installed laminate plank and press the cardboard with your fingers into the shape of the door frame. You carefully cut off any excess with a sharp utility knife. This way, you create a template in the shape of the required laminate board. Simply transfer the shape onto the laminate plank, cut it to fit, and you’re done. It worked very well for me, although it was quite a bit of work.
