Hello everyone,
I recently purchased the IKEA Platsa fabric inserts for my new shelving unit and now I’m wondering about the best way to wash them gently and properly so they don’t lose their shape or color.
The care label only has very general instructions that don’t really help, such as washing temperature or whether they can be tumble dried. Since these inserts are often used together with wood and metal, I want to make sure I avoid any mistakes. I’m also interested in practical methods for light everyday stains as well as more thorough cleaning.
Does anyone have experience with caring for these specific fabric inserts? Which washing programs work best, and are there any special tips for drying? I look forward to your advice and recommendations!

The fabric inserts of the IKEA Platsa system are usually made from a cotton-polyester blend. Due to this material combination, the following washing instructions are recommended:
- Washing temperature: maximum 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) to prevent shrinking or distortion
- Washing cycle: gentle or delicate cycle
- Do not use bleach to preserve color intensity
- No tumble drying: the inserts should be air-dried, as heat can damage their shape
- For everyday light soiling, wiping with a damp cloth is often sufficient
Additionally, I would recommend turning the inserts inside out before washing to protect the surfaces. This method helps ensure the longest possible lifespan without visible premature wear.

- thoroughly remove dust and heavy dirt from the inserts before washing
- avoid using fabric softeners, as they can affect the water-repellent treatment or the material itself
- apply a stain remover specifically to heavily soiled areas before the wash cycle
Although machine washing is possible, I strongly recommend strictly following the temperature and delicate wash programs. This prevents changes to the fabric structure or unpleasant deformation of the inserts. From my experience with similar IKEA fabric inserts, this significantly improves their durability.
For drying: it is better to lay them flat or hang them up, and never dry them in direct sunlight, as this can cause fading.

Wash at 30 to 40 degrees Celsius (86 to 104°F) on a gentle cycle, no fabric softener, air dry.A solid foundation, but the impact of water hardness and detergent type should not be underestimated. Many standard detergents contain optical brighteners or aggressive chemicals that can damage fibers in the long term.
Therefore, I recommend:
- Liquid detergent without bleach or optical brighteners
- If using hard water, consider a water softener to prevent fiber damage
Additionally, it is worth questioning whether the inserts need to be washed regularly or if spot cleaning with a steam cleaner could be an alternative, as this is gentler on the material.
What do you think? Is anyone here willing to extend durability by minimizing washing, or do you prefer frequent wash cycles?
