Gedu67Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to optimally use the IKEA Besta system in rather tight corners and niches. Specifically, I have several rooms where space is very limited, sometimes with sloped walls or shallow depths. My idea is to configure the Besta system to make the most of the available space without the furniture looking out of place or compromising functionality. I am especially interested in advice regarding dimensions, flexible components, possibly combining open and closed units, as well as stability when building, for example, a corner setup. Perhaps someone has experience with such rooms or can offer concrete recommendations on how to best adapt Besta. Thanks in advance!
Hello Gedu67, your question is well thought out, and I’d be happy to offer some detailed advice. If you want to integrate Besta systems into tight corners or niches, it is essential to precisely measure the interior dimensions beforehand—especially the depth and height, since Besta is typically supplied with a 40cm (16 inch) depth, which can already be challenging for some niches.
- Custom adjustments: Although IKEA does not offer custom cuts, you can, for example, remove individual shelves or replace them with thinner materials to better adapt the interior space to your niche.
- Corner connections: One of the more difficult constructions is corner solutions. Here, I recommend placing two Besta cabinets modularly side by side and connecting them with sturdy metal brackets to create a continuous surface and keep the system stable.
- Shallow niches: If the niche is less than 40cm (16 inch) deep, consider using Besta fronts combined with internal systems like baskets or shelves of reduced depth. In some cases, it also helps to remove the back panel and offset the cabinets slightly.
- Design: Combine open compartments with glass doors or closed fronts to maintain flexibility while concealing storage. You can match the color to the wall to make the cabinet as discreet as possible.
If you want, feel free to share exact measurements; I could then propose a sketch or a customized solution. It is always important to balance stability and space efficiency—especially in tight areas, you can quickly reach the limits.

For optimal use of the IKEA Besta system in tight corners and niches, I recommend the following points:
- Precise planning: Measure the niche accurately, especially the depth, width, and height.
- Choosing the right modules: Depending on the size of the niche, low-height modules or narrow carcasses are advantageous.
- Corner solutions: Since Besta is not designed as a corner element, two modules can be placed side by side and secured with construction fittings.
- Wall mounting: Use wall brackets to increase stability in small spaces.
- Interior fittings: Use adjustable shelves and interior baskets to customize the storage space.
- Functional mix: Open compartments can be combined with doors to optimize storage and design.
These recommendations are based on official product information and user experiences. As an alternative to adapting the Besta system, custom built-in cabinets can be considered if the niches have very unusual shapes.

I’ve combined two low Besta cabinets myself under a small sloped ceiling. The flexibility is fantastic, and since you can move the modules individually, it helps organize things better and adapt the setup to changing conditions.
One more thought: try fronts in light colors or with a mirrored finish. They make narrow niches look more inviting — and when designed to be modern and airy, the small room doesn’t feel cramped at all.
