liogeHello everyone, I am planning to use the IKEA Besta system for office storage as well as a workspace in my home office. My specific question is: How can I best organize the Besta to provide enough storage for files, office supplies, and equipment while also integrating a comfortable, ergonomic workspace with a work surface? I am especially interested in practical tips on how to combine the elements, which doors or drawers work best, and whether certain add-on or organization systems from IKEA are recommended for this purpose. Additionally, I would like to know how to improve stability and ergonomics if mounting a worktop on the Besta system. Thank you in advance for your opinions and experiences!

Santiagobu3 Oct 2016 11:02Hello lioge, your project with the Besta sounds great! Basically, Besta is very versatile. For efficiently organized office storage, you can combine the units with various inserts, such as boxes, file holders, or drawers. For the work surface, you can install a tabletop made of wood or acrylic that rests on and is fixed to the carcass. Make sure to have a comfortable working height—ideally between 72 and 75 cm (28 and 30 inches) from the floor. You can improve stability by connecting the units to each other and adding a support brace at the back. For organization, internal drawers or VARIERA systems from IKEA can also help, as they integrate well with Besta.

Simply mounting one large work surface onto the Besta often isn’t enough in terms of ergonomics and comfort. Have you considered how to manage cables in a sustainable way? Practical solutions for technology under the countertop are often missing. Also, I wonder whether Besta really offers the stability needed for heavier loads, especially if you want to integrate larger devices or printers. What has been your experience with this?

Have you already thought about how to manage cable organization in a sustainable way?Not in detail yet. I am actually planning a dedicated cable pass-through and possibly cutouts in the work surface.

Regarding load capacity: The Besta system is designed for average loads – individual components can hold about 15 to 30 kg (33 to 66 lbs), depending on the design. If you want to integrate heavier devices like printers or scanners, I recommend using reinforced table legs or additional support profiles. A sturdy frame under the worktop prevents sagging.
Concerning storage space, when using file folders, always consider the maximum load of the shelves, as this can vary significantly. For an ergonomic workspace, I suggest installing the worktop at approximately 72 cm (28 inches) height, possibly with height-adjustable legs if your seating height varies.
