I am considering getting the Ikea Besta system and would like to hear about your experiences: How do you use Besta flexibly when your living situation changes frequently? I am specifically thinking of situations like moving to smaller or larger apartments, renovations in rented flats, or temporary changes such as working from home and varying needs for storage and media furniture. I am particularly interested in how to design the system modularly and versatilely so that individual components can be easily added or replaced without having to buy everything new each time. What tips do you have for smart planning, practical combinations of elements, and which types of fronts, sizes, or accessories help you stay flexible?
I worked with several small modules. Stability is not an issue when you connect them together. Ikea provides suitable connecting parts to keep everything secure. For less space, just use the 60cm (24 inches) module. Bonus: You can also easily place them on the floor without needing to fix them to the wall.
Another important factor for the flexible use of Ikea Besta is the weight and load capacity per module. The standard shelves are designed to hold about 25 kg (55 lbs), which is sufficient in most cases. For heavier loads such as electronic devices or heavy books, additional support battens should be considered. For frequent rearrangements, I also recommend minimizing the number of screw connections in the design and instead using connectors and dowels. This makes assembly and disassembly much easier without compromising stability. A certain standardization of front colors and handles also helps to simplify the visual changes when expanding.

This significantly simplifies assembly and disassembly without compromising stability. That’s an important point, thank you. Especially for temporary setups or when I want to use the furniture as a flexible solution for multiple apartment types, I need that ease of assembly. How do you usually handle the appearance when you add or modify modules? Do you tend to use neutral fronts that match everything, or do you regularly change the look with different fronts and handles?
