Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install my kitchen using Ikea Metod cabinets and would like to use the soft-close drawer systems. I am wondering: What is the best systematic approach to assembling Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close drawers to ensure I don’t overlook any parts and that the drawers end up working smoothly, precisely, and without issues?

I am especially interested in a structured, step-by-step process from preparation through the actual assembly to installation and final adjustment of the soft-close mechanism. What tools and aids help make this process easier?

I already have some experience with furniture assembly, but this time I want to focus on a systematic approach to avoid unpleasant surprises. Does anyone have tips or, even better, a checklist? Thanks in advance!

Good morning, that’s a very good question. A systematic approach is essential when assembling Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close drawers, as small mistakes can quickly result in sticking drawers or misaligned fronts.

I would divide the assembly into several phases:
- Preparation: Check all delivered parts for completeness, carefully review the included assembly instructions, and sort the screws and fittings. It’s also very helpful to create a well-lit and tidy workspace.
- Assembling the frame elements: Pay close attention to the precise angle settings of the side panels and back panels. Especially with Metod, the side profiles are relatively thin, so any error can have a strong impact.
- Installing the drawer slides: The soft-close mechanism in Metod is usually integrated into the slides, which are fixed with screws. Here, exact alignment and parallelism of the slides are crucial; otherwise, the drawer will not operate smoothly.
- Assembling the drawers: First build the box, then attach the fronts, which you connect to the box structure. The soft-close mechanism is located directly on or within the slides.
- Final assembly and fine adjustment: After inserting the drawer, use the front adjustment options (height, depth, lateral) and test the damping multiple times.

As tools, I recommend a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque, a spirit level, and possibly small washers if fine adjustments of the slides become necessary.

One more question: Do you plan to fix the cabinets to the wall? This is especially important for tall units for safety reasons.

Yes, the cabinets will be fixed to a flat wall. Fortunately, these are not tall units but base cabinets that are 60cm (24 inches) wide and 80cm (31.5 inches) high. Nevertheless, I want a secure fixing to prevent any wobbling.

Thanks for the procedure; the clear distinction between the steps is very helpful! You recommend aligning the rails very precisely – how can I tell if the alignment is correct? Is this based on the “running feel” or visually checking?

Regarding the tools: I have a cordless drill, a spirit level, and standard tools. What do you mean by washers – where exactly might these be needed?

If the drawers catch or scrape, the slides are not aligned parallel. So first check this with a spirit level and visually to see if the slides are at the same height. You will need washers if the hole pattern on the slide profile does not exactly match the position on the cabinet – this way you can compensate for small gaps.

My advice would be to stay a bit flexible during installation 😉 Soft-close drawers might seem a bit more complicated at first, but the actual mechanism in Metod is quite cleverly designed. For example, I always make sure to screw the rails in loosely at first, then insert the drawer and check how it moves. Only after that do I tighten the screws properly—this way, you can still make some adjustments.

A small tip: The damping works best when the rails are well lubricated. Just clean the rails with a dry cloth before you start assembling.

And if you’re on the go and hear creaking, try slightly loosening the screws and then tightening them again. Usually, that’s when you find out where the tension is too high. 😊

Good morning everyone! I would like to add that the order of assembly is especially important. When working with Metod, I always recommend first fully assembling the carcass, then attaching the drawer slides, and only after that assembling and inserting the drawers. Many people underestimate how important professional front adjustment is: the fronts should not only be visually aligned but also at the same height across all drawers. Usually, this can be finely adjusted using the adjustment screws on the drawer.

You can test this by gently sliding the drawer: if it closes smoothly without resistance or sticking, the alignment is usually fine. A drawer that moves too loosely will wobble side to side; too tight means it catches or is difficult to open or close.

I would also recommend initially tightening all screws lightly and then gradually tightening them step by step to make fine adjustments easier.
