Hello everyone, I have several Malm bedside tables from Ikea, which unfortunately are quite wobbly. The problem is that they don’t sit completely flat on my hardwood floor and wobble slightly with any touch. I am especially interested in how to stabilize such furniture without affecting its appearance or making major modifications to the piece. Are there proven methods to both prevent wobbling and improve stability over the long term? Maybe also tips on how to even out unevenness in the floor itself? I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!
Hello draida,
It is a common problem that Malm nightstands tend to wobble slightly on uneven floors. A proven method to improve stability is to use furniture glides or felt pads that you stick to the feet. These often have a small plastic or polymer cap that can compensate for minor unevenness.
Another simple solution is to insert small wedges made of cork or hard rubber under the wobbling legs until the table stands stable. This hardly affects the appearance if the materials match the color.
If you don’t want to alter the floor at that spot, you can also install adjustable furniture feet. These screw-in feet are attached to the bottom of the furniture and allow for millimeter-precise adjustment.
To compensate for floor unevenness, there are also special thin plastic pads („leveling pads“) often used under furniture with screw-in feet.
In short:
- Felt or plastic glides
- Small wedges (cork, rubber)
- Adjustable screw-in feet
I hope this helps! If you like, I can provide more information about installation options or materials.
Good luck! 🙂

A proven method to improve stability are so-called furniture glides or felt padsThat’s correct; this is often the first step, as felt pads provide light cushioning and help level minor floor irregularities. However, with Malm bedside tables, this may sometimes not be enough because the legs are often not adjustable, and unevenness can affect larger areas.
In such a case, I would recommend the following approach, as it is both practical and durable:
1. First, use a spirit level to check which corner of the table gives way. This helps to take precise measurements.
2. Then, you can get a set of adjustable furniture feet – these are simple screw-in feet that you attach under the table legs. This allows you to adjust the height, and there are also adjustable versions with rubber buffers that protect the floor and provide non-slip properties.
3. If you prefer not to drill into the bedside table, there are also clamp adapters or self-adhesive pads that can bridge slight height differences. However, the adhesion here is not always permanent.
4. If the table legs are very thin, I would suggest a small strip of furniture glides with a rubber base (not just felt), so they compress slightly and adapt better.
One more note: if the hardwood floor is very uneven, the problem might be caused by localized dips. In that case, placing a thin rug or sturdy mats under the table can help create a more stable surface.
What exactly is the condition of your floor? Are there larger dips, uneven spots, or just slight variations? The more detailed the information, the better the optimal solution can be determined.
Perhaps you can provide more details here?

If that’s not enough, use thin wooden wedges under one or two legs until the nightstands stand stable. Ideally, choose a color that matches the floor or table.

If the parquet floor is very uneven, the problem could also lie in localized irregularities in the flooring.I agree with that. I had similar issues and initially tried to stabilize the tables – that only helped to a small extent.
What helped me personally was attaching small non-slip rubber pads under all the table legs, along with very thin felt pads for protection. This way, the tables stay steady without wobbling, and the parquet floor remains undamaged.
Sometimes a combination of different aids works best. It is also important to ensure the floor is properly cleaned before applying anything so that the adhesive lasts as long as possible.
Be patient with the fine adjustments – sometimes it takes several tries until everything stands perfectly 🙂
