Hello everyone, I am planning to install several IKEA Metod wall cabinets in my kitchen. The challenge is that the walls in different areas have varying constructions – some parts are solid brick walls, others are drywall panels, and in some places there is even a combination of timber studs behind gypsum board. My main question is: how can I securely and stably mount the Metod wall cabinets on these different wall materials without compromising the structure? I am especially interested in the appropriate fasteners, load distribution, and whether additional reinforcement is necessary for lighter wall materials. Are there specific types of anchors or screws that are particularly suitable for the weight of the Metod cabinets, and what is the best approach to reliably align and fix the cabinets despite the different wall constructions? I would greatly appreciate practical tips or concrete recommendations with examples.

For the secure installation of IKEA Metod wall cabinets on different wall materials, the following points are crucial:

- For solid brick walls, use heavy-duty anchors such as expansion anchors or metal anchors that are rated for the cabinet weight (approximately 15-25 kg (33-55 lbs) per cabinet plus contents).
- For drywall (plasterboard), it is essential to use cavity anchors or toggle bolts, or even better, to fix the cabinets directly to the wooden or metal studs behind the drywall. The screws should be at least 6 mm (¼ inch) thick and penetrate deeply into the support.
- When dealing with wood studs behind drywall, it is advisable to locate the studs using a stud finder or by tapping lightly. Attach the cabinets to the studs to ensure maximum load-bearing capacity.

Additional reinforcements, such as a wooden batten or metal profiles installed during mounting, can distribute the load across multiple fasteners and significantly improve stability.

In general: Always use the IKEA installation manual as a basis, but adapt it with appropriate fixing materials depending on the wall type and pay attention to load-bearing capacity. With the correct choice of anchors, a safe solution can be easily achieved.

For drywall panels, you absolutely need anchors called cavity anchors or toggle bolts, or even better, direct fastening to the underlying wooden or metal studs.

Exactly, I’d like to add: One of the most common mistakes when mounting wall cabinets on drywall is relying solely on anchors in the drywall itself, which is not strong enough. I strongly recommend locating the support studs beforehand using an electronic stud finder. These supports are usually spaced 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 inches) apart.

If direct mounting to the studs is not possible, for example if the stud spacing is wider than the mounting holes on the cabinets, an additional horizontal wooden or metal strip can be fastened to at least two studs. The cabinet is then mounted to this strip, which distributes the load over multiple points and increases stability.

Another important point: The screws must be long enough to penetrate deeply into the studs or anchors to prevent tilting or loosening. The screws supplied by IKEA are often not sufficient, especially for drywall installations.

In general, it is important to consider how heavy the cabinets will be once fully loaded: the heavier the load, the more critical the fastening. Having a second person during installation is helpful to align and securely hold the cabinet while fastening.

For all wall materials: The choice of anchors and screws must be adapted to the wall type and take the expected load into account.

- Solid walls (brick, concrete): Heavy-duty expansion anchors or metal anchors with appropriately sized screws (e.g., 8 mm diameter) are suitable. The load capacity chart helps select the right anchor.

- Drywall: At least toggle bolts or molly bolts should be used here. Alternatively, for timber stud walls, long wood screws can be directly fixed into the studs (minimum 40 mm wood screws recommended).

- In cases of mixed wall types or uncertainty, mounting battens made of solid wood or sturdy plywood are recommended to distribute the load.

- Important: Screws and anchors must be long enough to engage at least 50 mm (2 inches) into solid substrate.

- Avoid cheap anchors or unsuitable combinations – otherwise, long-term stability can be compromised.

As a rule of thumb, the cabinet should always be secured to at least two fixing points per unit to prevent tipping.
