Hello everyone, my question is for those who have experience installing IKEA Metod kitchen backsplashes. Specifically, I want to know how to securely and permanently attach these backsplashes without them coming loose or getting damaged over time.
I am especially interested in which tools and fastening methods you would recommend, whether the surfaces need any special preparation, and if there are any tips to avoid damage to the walls or the backsplashes themselves.
Are there particular installation steps that are especially important, and perhaps mistakes to definitely avoid? I plan to install the backsplash in my new kitchen and want to make absolutely sure everything is stable and neat. I would greatly appreciate helpful personal experiences, step-by-step advice, and potential pitfalls to watch out for.

Hello Fonau,
for the secure installation of IKEA Metod kitchen backsplashes, I recommend the following structured approach:
- Surface preparation: The wall must be clean, dry, load-bearing, and free of grease. Drywall or uneven surfaces should be treated with suitable filler compound.
- Tools: You will need a spirit level, drill, appropriate wall plugs and screws, measuring tape, and a suitable backsplash mounting system (e.g., clips or rails, depending on the backsplash type).
- Mounting method: There are two common methods — direct screwing or using mounting profiles. The backsplashes are usually attached at the back of the Metod cabinets but can also be mounted with wall clips if wall mounting is required.
- Step-by-step: 1. Measure accurately, 2. Pre-drill holes, 3. Use appropriate wall plugs, 4. Fix the backsplash in place and check that everything is flush.
Mistakes to avoid include irregular drilling without precise measurement, not using suitable wall plugs for the wall type, or overloading the screw points.
If you attach the backsplash directly to the wall: Make sure the wall’s load-bearing capacity is sufficient and do not use low-quality materials. Using the correct wall plugs and screws ensures a secure, durable installation.
When mounting on Metod cabinets, it is also advisable to fix the backsplashes in place before the final assembly.
I hope this helps!

I initially had problems because I screwed the backsplash directly onto a freshly painted wall – the paint peeled off and it looked messy afterwards. So: Make sure to wait until your wall is completely dry and properly cured.

I was very nervous and afraid of making mistakes; a small tip: Have a second person help with the measuring to reduce errors.
For mounting, I used small brackets myself to increase stability. This held the backsplash very securely.
Also important: Take your time and don’t rush. Especially if you’re unsure, it’s worth double-checking everything along the way.

The Metod backsplash can then be easily fixed onto this.

There are two common methods — direct screwing or using mounting profiles.Based on my experience, I recommend using mounting profiles, especially for large surfaces. This allows for more flexible adjustment and prevents damage to the backsplash caused by small wall irregularities.
It is also important to check the backsplashes after installation for clean seals or waterproofing, especially if the kitchen is located in wet areas. This helps prevent moisture damage.
Furthermore, for heavy backsplashes, such as those made of glass or particularly thick panels, I suggest adding extra support points to better distribute the load.
