Hello everyone, I want to securely mount my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on drywall and have a few questions. The walls are standard gypsum plasterboards on metal studs, not load-bearing masonry. My goal is to ensure the cabinets are firmly fixed and can safely handle everyday stresses. Specifically, I would like to know:

- Which anchors or fasteners are best suited for this situation?
- What is the most reliable way to locate the metal studs behind the drywall?
- Do I need to reinforce the cabinets with a wooden batten, or are there other methods to distribute the load?
- Are there minimum distances or heights I should observe to prevent wall damage?

I have seen various fasteners, such as special metal construction screws or heavy-duty anchors, but I am unsure how these apply specifically to Ikea Metod cabinets. Any practical experience or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

For mounting Ikea Metod cabinets on drywall panels, you should use heavy-duty metal anchors specifically designed for hollow walls or metal studs. Alternatively, metal expansion anchors and self-drilling anchors are options, provided they have verified load-bearing capacity.

A high-quality metal or multi-detector reliably helps identify the position of the metal profiles. If in doubt, a small test drill with extremely thin drill bits can be done.

Attaching a continuous counter batten made of sturdy wood has proven to be a safe measure, as it distributes loads over a larger wall area and provides multiple fastening points. This is especially advisable for heavy kitchen cabinets.

Spacing should be chosen so the fasteners hit solid metal studs and are sufficiently distributed; typically, you follow the stud spacing of 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 inches). Avoid placing screws too close to edges. Follow Ikea’s installation instructions regarding hanging height and load specifications.

You’ve hit the nail on the head! When dealing with drywall (plasterboard) walls, a smart approach is essential. I strongly recommend installing a batten framework behind the cabinets. This adds stability and distributes the load.

A small tip: simply screw a thick wooden batten horizontally onto the studs and then hang the cabinets from it. This doesn’t just feel more secure – it also gives you great confidence if something heavy is placed.

And yes, the metal detector is your best friend – without it, nothing really gets started 😊. So, get comfortable – with the right preparation, installation becomes enjoyable!

I completely agree! Screw it directly into the metal studs and attach a thick wooden batten, then hang the cabinets on that.

Additionally, I recommend using strong, preferably long screws—at least 5 cm (2 inches)—to ensure the load is well supported.

Metal expansion anchors do work, but under prolonged load, they are less reliable than properly screwed battens into the studs.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds reasonable. However, my drywall is only about 12.5mm (0.5 inches) thick, with metal studs spaced typically at 60cm (24 inches) behind it.

So, is it generally sufficient to fasten the battens to the metal studs with sheet metal screws and then hang the cabinets on the battens? How thick should such a batten be? Would an 18mm (0.7 inches) OSB board be suitable for this?

That’s valuable to know since I often fill the cabinets completely with heavy items.

In summary: For drywall with metal studs, using a sturdy wooden batten is truly a reliable solution. This offers several advantages:

- Distribution of the load across multiple screws and metal profiles
- Prevention of point loads on the drywall
- Easy later adjustment or extension

Regarding the batten: 18mm (0.7 inch) OSB is stable enough. Alternatively, a planed spruce batten around 40–60mm (1.6–2.4 inches) wide can be used.

I also recommend installing a plywood or drywall panel with double thickness in certain spots before mounting the batten, especially if you want to hang particularly heavy cabinets. This further increases the wall’s strength.

The screws for the batten should be driven directly into the metal studs; you can pre-drill with a thin metal drill bit to make it easier for the screw to grip and to avoid deforming the profile.

All in all, good preparation and precise screw placement are key for a secure installation.
