Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question regarding furniture anchoring: How can I securely fasten Ikea Malm furniture when it is placed on carpeted floors? I understand that most safety systems are designed for hard floors like laminate or tiles, where stability is ensured by firmness and friction. With carpet, the surface is soft and often uneven, which makes the usual wall anchors less reliable.

Specifically, I’m referring to the wall anchors Ikea provides for Malm furniture – are they effective at all on carpet? Or are there special additions or tricks to reliably prevent the furniture from tipping over without compromising the appearance or damaging the carpet?

I’m also curious whether anchoring the furniture to the floor itself (for example, with special pads or hook-and-loop fasteners) might be useful to increase stability. Perhaps someone has experience with the combination of Malm furniture and carpet.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello prapeo,

First of all, thank you for the precise question, that really helps to provide a good answer!

Regarding your question about Malm furniture on carpet: Ikea’s standard wall anchors are actually designed for solid, smooth floors. The issue with carpet is that the furniture can slide because the carpet reduces the stability of the feet, and the wall mount alone may not provide enough tip-over protection under strong pressure.

My recommendation:

1. Use wall anchors: Always install these, as this remains the most important safety measure. Be sure to use appropriate wall plugs for your wall type (drywall, concrete, etc.) to ensure a secure fixing.

2. Additionally, protect the floor under the furniture base: Since Malm furniture can easily slide on smooth floors, it is advisable to use non-slip mats or rubber pads directly on the carpet. These increase the friction between the furniture and the carpet.

3. For extra security, you can use self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape systems (Velcro), with one side fixed to the furniture and the other side attached to a solid board beneath the carpet (if feasible). This truly prevents the furniture from sliding.

4. Avoid driving nails or screws directly into the carpet or floor to prevent damaging the carpet.

In summary: wall mounting is essential; on carpet, add non-slip mats or hook-and-loop tape as an extra measure. This effectively prevents tipping without damaging the carpet. If you like, I can also recommend some sources for suitable non-slip materials.

Best regards!

This is a really important point that I would like to explain in more detail because stability on carpet often fails due to improper anchoring.

When installing the wall anchors, make sure that the plugs and screws are suitable for the type of wall. Especially with drywall, you should avoid using simple plugs or screws that are too short, as they won’t reliably hold the weight of Malm furniture under load.

A small workshop for you:

1. Identify the wall type (concrete, brick, drywall).
2. Use heavy-duty anchors for concrete, universal plugs for brick.
3. Use drywall anchors (such as hollow-wall anchors or toggle bolts) for drywall.
4. Use screws at least 6–8 cm (2.5–3 inches) long to ensure deep penetration into the wall.

Furthermore, I recommend following the Ikea safety kit instructions carefully and securing the furniture at multiple points (if possible), not just at the top. This is especially helpful for tall furniture like Malm.

Regarding carpet:

Carpet itself is soft and often cushioned, so the furniture has a higher risk of tipping on its base. As mentioned before, anti-slip mats work well here; you can simply place them in front of the furniture or under its feet.

Alternatively, you can place a thin plywood sheet under the carpet to create a hard surface, then add the anti-slip mat on top—sounds like extra work but is very effective.

So: wall anchoring + reinforced base + anti-slip mats = a safe solution.

If you want more tips on selecting the right products, feel free to ask!

I think the topic of “appearance versus safety” deserves a closer look here.

Because often the appearance is overrated, while stability is crucial, especially in households with children or pets. A tipped piece of furniture can have serious consequences.

That makes sense, but what about the option of securing the furniture to the floor in addition to using Velcro or rubber pads in emergencies? There are special floor fasteners that are almost invisible—for example, metal strips or floor anchors that can be placed under the carpet and attached to the furniture. This way, the carpet remains undamaged and there is more stability than with wall anchors alone.

I believe one shouldn’t only think about conventional Ikea safety fittings but be a bit more creative. Are there any experiences on how to implement such solutions without damaging the furniture afterward? After all, it’s better if the furniture stands securely than just looking good.

What do you think? Is this compromise between appearance, safety, and carpet protection feasible with Malm furniture on carpet?
