I plan to securely fix several IKEA Malm dressers in my apartment, which has carpeted floors, because I’m concerned about stability and the risk of tipping over. The problem is that the carpet is quite thick and soft, making it difficult or even impossible to screw the furniture directly to the floor.
My question is: How can I securely fasten Malm furniture on carpeted floors without them wobbling or tipping over easily? Are there special fixing systems or alternatives to screws that won’t damage the carpet but still provide sufficient stability?
I mainly use the furniture as dressers and want to make them childproof since there are small children nearby. I would really appreciate specific tips, preferably with advice on materials or installation methods.
Thanks in advance!

For securely fastening Malm furniture on carpeted floors, I recommend a combination of several measures:
1. Wall anchoring: The original IKEA wall anchors for Malm are specifically designed to prevent furniture from tipping over. These anchors should be used preferably—they are attached to the wall, not the floor, which is the better solution when dealing with carpet.
2. Anti-slip pads: Special anti-slip pads or rubber mats can be placed under the furniture legs. These increase friction and prevent sliding on the carpet.
3. Adjusting furniture feet: If the furniture wobbles slightly, suitable supports such as small wooden or plastic plates can be placed under the feet to create a stable contact surface.
In general, I advise against drilling directly into the carpet, as this provides little stability and damages the carpet. Stability is ensured by wall anchoring, not by fastening into the floor.
The key is primarily wall anchoring combined with non-slip materials under the furniture legs.

I agree with KAULIS and would like to add a few practical tips, especially for households with children:
First, it’s important to understand that securing furniture placed on carpeted floors must mainly be done through the wall. The carpet does not provide stable anchoring. Therefore, IKEA wall mounts made of metal or plastic are your safest option.
If you place anti-slip pads under the furniture legs, you further reduce the risk of shifting, which is particularly helpful on thick carpets. I often use felt pads with rubber backing, which are also available in small sets.
If child safety is especially important, also check whether the furniture has been tested for tipping resistance and if the wall mounts are installed with the appropriate anchors for your wall type. Concrete, drywall (plasterboard), and brick walls require different types of anchors.
One more addition: for increased stability, you can use base plates that spread the pressure over the carpet, giving the furniture a firmer foundation.

Hello and thank you for the previous replies.
I would like to elaborate a bit more on this topic because securely fastening Malm dressers on carpeted floors requires some care.
First, it is important to carefully assess both the floor and the wall. Since the carpet reduces the contact with the floor, classic floor anchors are usually ineffective because they do not provide enough grip and can damage the carpet.
As the first step, always use the supplied wall fasteners. I recommend using heavy-duty anchors for solid walls (concrete, brick) or special cavity anchors for dry drywall (plasterboard) walls. Screwing into the wall pulls the furniture firmly in place and prevents tipping.
For carpeted floors:
- Non-slip elements such as foam rubber or rubber pads under each leg can significantly reduce the tendency to slip.
- Alternatively or additionally, furniture coasters made of hard plastic help distribute the pressure on the carpet and provide a more stable base.
An important note: The furniture should be as unloaded as possible, meaning avoid storing heavy items in hard-to-reach areas to prevent imbalance.
If you plan to move the furniture frequently, modular solutions with easily removable wall anchors are advisable.
I have two questions for you to better assess the situation:
1. How thick is the carpet exactly? (approx. 5mm (0.2 inches), 10mm (0.4 inches), 20mm (0.8 inches)?)
2. What type of wall is it? (solid, drywall/plasterboard, or similar)
This information helps determine the choice of anchors and fastening methods.
