Hello everyone,

I hope someone in this forum can help me: How do I securely attach Malm furniture, especially dressers and wardrobes from IKEA, to the wall in rental apartments?

My main concern is that the furniture does not tip over or fall, especially with children around or if accidentally bumped. Since I live in a rental apartment, I cannot easily drill extensively or cause significant damage to the walls.

What options are available to stabilize and reliably secure the furniture while minimizing alterations to the building structure? Are there any special accessories or tricks you would recommend?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add that the weight and volume of the piece of furniture are crucial factors.

Malm dressers are particularly critical for children due to their height and risk of tipping. A piece of furniture like this should always be secured to the wall with screws.

Also, check whether the landlord will cover the holes in the wall or accept minor repair work; this can make the decision easier.

Many recommend using the wall fasteners provided by IKEA according to the instructions and fixing them to a sturdy wall material (brick, concrete). This provides the most safety.

If you want to avoid drilling entirely, be aware that stability will be significantly reduced. In that case, it is better to place the furniture in a low-traffic area where tipping would not pose a risk of injury.

Absolutely, which is why I also mentioned the additional anti-tip brackets that IKEA sells.

Besides securing the furniture, it’s also advisable not to load the drawers with overly heavy or unevenly distributed items. This way, the piece stays heavier at the bottom and lighter at the top, further reducing the risk of tipping.

For mounting on brick walls: use at least an 8 mm (5/16 inch) masonry drill bit and high-quality anchors.

Summary:
- Drill into brick walls and use anchors
- Install IKEA wall mounting brackets
- Use padded stoppers or anti-slip mats underneath
- Pay attention to load distribution inside the furniture

That way, you’ll be on the safe side.

Consider load distribution in the furniture\

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice!

I have now planned to use the IKEA wall mounts, drilling 8 mm (0.3 inches) holes for the anchors into the bricks, and also placing anti-slip mats under the feet. I will make sure to consider the load distribution.

One last question: How well can the drill holes be filled with standard filler or acrylic plaster after moving out, so that no major damage remains?

I’m not very experienced in renovations and want to do the job as neatly as possible. 🙂

Thanks for your assessments!
