Hello everyone,
I am planning to install several Ikea Billy shelves in my garage. The problem is that my garage floor is made of plain concrete, which is not very even and can also be exposed to moisture. Therefore, I want to fasten the shelves as securely as possible to prevent them from wobbling or tipping over, especially when I place heavy items on them.
My specific question is: What are the best ways to securely and permanently fix Billy shelves to a plain concrete garage floor so that the shelves stand safely and can withstand loads over a long period? I am open to suggestions involving screws, anchors, brackets, or other fasteners, and it would be great if you could also address floor preparation or potential moisture damage.
Thank you in advance for your advice!

Place a thin rubber mat between the shelving base and the concrete floor. This is especially important if the garage does not have controlled ventilation and seasonal moisture occurs. The rubber mat not only prevents moisture damage but also reduces vibrations that could loosen the screws over time.

Should the shelf be directly attached to the wall, or is anchoring it to the floor enough? Please make sure to secure it both to the wall and the floor. A shelf anchored only at the base is more prone to tipping, especially under uneven loads.
Regarding drilling: Resist the temptation to cut corners on the drill’s suction power. A hammer drill with the correct diameter and sufficient depth for the anchor is essential for long-term stability.

A shelf that is only fixed at the bottom is more prone to tipping overAbsolutely correct. I once had the problem myself that the bottom fixings alone were not enough. The shelf leaned slightly, which made me feel uneasy.

Moisture from the garage can also damage metal parts, which is often overlooked.
I also recommend, if possible, raising the Billy shelves with small plastic feet to improve air circulation and better protect the wooden parts from ground moisture.
Good luck with your project! 🙂
