Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several Ikea Billy shelves in my garage. The problem is that my garage floor is made of plain concrete, which is not very even and can also be exposed to moisture. Therefore, I want to fasten the shelves as securely as possible to prevent them from wobbling or tipping over, especially when I place heavy items on them.

My specific question is: What are the best ways to securely and permanently fix Billy shelves to a plain concrete garage floor so that the shelves stand safely and can withstand loads over a long period? I am open to suggestions involving screws, anchors, brackets, or other fasteners, and it would be great if you could also address floor preparation or potential moisture damage.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

I would recommend using heavy-duty anchors (e.g., chemical anchors or expansion anchors) and securing the shelves to the floor with metal brackets. It is important to choose the anchors according to the concrete quality and to drill the holes carefully beforehand.

This is definitely a good start. To securely fasten the shelves, the following steps should be considered:

1. Prepare the floor: Since the floor is rough and uneven, first level out imperfections by grinding or applying a thin epoxy resin coating. This also helps protect against moisture.

2. Choose the right anchors: For concrete, heavy-duty anchors or chemical injection anchors are best, as they can support high loads. Expansion anchors are simpler but less reliable for heavy loads.

3. Use mounting brackets: For Billy shelves, it is advisable to attach brackets both at the floor and on the wall behind to prevent tipping.

4. Distance from moisture: To prevent moisture damage, place rubber or plastic pads between the shelf and the floor.

5. Screw material: Use galvanized or stainless steel screws to avoid rust.

What does your concrete base look like exactly? Are there any cracks or signs of moisture? That would affect the solution.

Maybe you can also add how much weight you plan to store on the shelves?

Thank you for your detailed reply! The floor is relatively level but not completely smooth. There are no cracks, but sometimes I notice slight moisture in the garage, depending on the weather.

Regarding the weight: I will mostly store tools, paint cans, and heavy plastic containers. It is possible that a shelf board will be loaded with up to 30 kg (66 lbs). So it is not just for decoration but a real “work storage.”

Does this mean I should rather use chemical anchors? I was also wondering whether the shelf should be fixed directly to the wall, or if securing it to the floor is sufficient?

Are there any differences in terms of stability or moisture protection?

Yes, when combining a concrete floor with loaded shelving and moisture exposure, using chemical injection anchors is recommended. They provide the highest load capacity and are securely fixed permanently in the concrete.

For maximum stability, the shelves should be secured both to the floor and the wall. Wall fixing prevents tipping and enhances safety. However, if the wall is sensitive to moisture, it is important to consider how best to protect it (e.g., spacers, corrosion protection).

This also offers better protection against toppling under load. It is essential that the wall has suitable fixing options (solid wall, no hollow cavities). In garages, walls are usually solid, so screws with appropriate plugs will hold firmly.

Overall, I recommend floor mounting using chemical injection anchors with a permanent moisture protection layer underneath, plus a secure attachment to the wall at the appropriate height.

In addition to the already good tips: Make sure to thoroughly clean the surface before drilling, so that the drilling dust does not affect the adhesion of the chemical anchor. This is often an underestimated point.

For installation: Glue the mounting brackets with construction adhesive before screwing them in. This provides additional permanent stability to the shelf.

Also, I would place a thin rubber mat between the base of the shelf and the concrete floor. This provides moisture protection and prevents the wood from direct contact with the concrete.
