Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to set up some IKEA Malm furniture on my laminate floor but am having trouble securing it firmly so that it neither wobbles nor damages the floor. The furniture should remain stable during everyday use, such as when opening the drawers.

My specific question is: How can I securely and permanently fix Malm furniture to laminate flooring without damaging the floor or requiring major modifications? What methods, materials, or special techniques work best for laminate? Are there any particular considerations to keep in mind, for example regarding the wooden construction of the furniture or the sensitive surface of the laminate?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

When attaching Malm furniture to laminate flooring, it is important to avoid causing permanent damage and to ensure stability despite the smooth surface.

Laminate is pressure-sensitive and reacts negatively to moisture when inappropriate materials are used. Therefore, felt pads or glides are standard.

To stabilize without directly screwing into the floor, wall mounting with anti-tip straps, as recommended by IKEA, is advisable. This prevents dangerous tipping.

For free-standing furniture, non-slip rubber pads help, especially on flat floors, where they also reduce noise.

Heavy furniture should always be secured against tipping. Direct fixation to the laminate floor is not recommended, as it can damage the floor.

Summary:
- Furniture feet with glides/felt pads
- Non-slip mats
- Anti-tip wall anchors

From personal experience, anti-tip protection is especially important.

If a piece of furniture wobbles slightly, you can use small wedges made of wood or plastic, which are inserted between the furniture and the floor.

That sounds interesting. Are there typical sizes or materials that have proven to be particularly effective? I want to avoid the wedges losing their effectiveness quickly or damaging the furniture’s finish.

Good to know, as that was exactly the temptation I was worried about. How reliable are the recommended anti-tip straps? I want the furniture to be stable and pose no risk to children.

Hey everyone!

Wedges are really practical, especially when you want your laminate flooring to look great while keeping the furniture stable – I recommend flexible plastic wedges coated with rubber, as you can easily adjust them to uneven surfaces. They are usually about 2-3 cm (1 inch) high, shaped like a small triangle, so they grip well.

Regarding anti-tip straps: these are real lifesavers in everyday use, especially with Malm dressers. They’re easy to install, usually made of sturdy nylon with metal hooks – they provide enough support even if someone pulls on the furniture. A little tip: when buying, look for ones that include protective adhesive films for the laminate to avoid any residue.

And don’t worry, I’ve been using them for years, even with kids around. Safety first! 🙂

Plastic wedges are sturdy and do not leave marks. Anti-tip straps are effective and mandatory when children are present.

I can easily understand how difficult it is to keep furniture stable without risking damage to the laminate flooring. I once had the problem that my dresser wobbled slightly when opening the drawers and thought it couldn’t be improved.

Using felt pads and non-slip mats already helped a lot. However, the best effect came from securing it to the wall. Safety was especially important to me because of my daughter.

So, go ahead and install anti-tip straps—they really make a difference and take away that uneasy feeling.

Hello everyone,

to summarize the previous recommendations and add a few details:

1. The choice of appropriate pads (felt pads, anti-slip mats) greatly depends on the furniture weight and the floor surface. For Malm furniture, which is relatively heavy and does not have legs, I recommend felt pads at least 2 mm (0.08 inches) thick combined with a thin rubber layer underneath.

2. Plastic wedges come in different hardness levels; some are flexible and slightly compress under load – this increases stability and protects the floor.

3. For wall mounting, screw anchors in the wall / through-rotating anchors (TRG) or thermoplastic adhesive systems are possible options that hold well and avoid residues. However, the latter are rarely secure enough alone for heavy furniture elements.

4. Another important tip: measure the floor levelness with a spirit level before placing the furniture – this can prevent many problems.

One more question for kellygla: Have you tried placing the chest of drawers on carpet? Sometimes the stability changes significantly as a result.
