Hello everyone,

I am planning to secure several IKEA Malm dressers in my bedroom on laminate flooring because they seem a bit unstable to me. I am particularly interested in how to fasten these dressers as securely and safely as possible without damaging the laminate or leaving unpleasant marks. Are there clever methods or special fixing materials suitable for Malm dressers on laminate that can also handle heavier loads?

It would also be important for me to know whether securing to the wall alone is sufficient or if it makes sense to additionally fix the dresser directly to the floor. I look forward to any tips and experiences!

Hello liruto,

For drywall, standard anchors are usually not sufficient because drywall has low load-bearing capacity. It’s best to use special hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts – these provide good support in gypsum plasterboard.

The screws should ideally be long enough to ensure at least 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) of solid grip in the anchor and wall material.

Regarding rubber pads: There are self-adhesive anti-slip furniture pads, for example made of felt or rubber with strong adhesive. Brands like "Tesa" or "3M" are often recommended. It is important to thoroughly clean the surfaces before applying the pads to ensure long-lasting adhesion.

I have been using these pads (about 3-5 mm (0.1-0.2 inches) thick) on my furniture for years, and they hold very well on laminate flooring without leaving marks.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for the helpful explanation. In my case, it really is a drywall partition, so I will buy the appropriate hollow wall anchors.

Does anyone here have experience with how stable dressers really are when they can only be attached to drywall? Does it make sense to distribute the load over two or more fixing points?

And one last question: Should the screws for wall mounting be placed at the level of the upper cross brace or below the drawers? Where is the best position?

I have personally mounted Malm dressers on drywall – it works well if you use the right anchors.

Definitely. Two mounting points at the top left and right are ideal, as this evenly distributes the load.

It’s best to place them just above the top drawer near the back, where the dresser is most stable and the frame is designed for mounting.

If you want to be sure about the screw length or type of anchor before installation, I recommend measuring the wall thickness and asking for advice at your hardware store.

Good luck! 🙂

Thank you all for the detailed and practical advice!

In the meantime, we have secured the dressers using hollow wall anchors and placed furniture pads under the legs. Everything feels very stable and the laminate floor has not been damaged.

The tips on distributing the fixing points and the adhesive strength of the pads were especially helpful.

If I have any more questions about furniture assembly in the future, I know where to find help here. Thanks again!
