Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an Ikea Platsa system on a wooden wall and am unsure about the safest way to do this. I want to avoid the structure becoming unstable or coming loose later, as the Platsa can get quite heavy, especially when many compartments are filled.

My wall consists of solid wooden boards, approximately 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick, which have been nailed directly onto a load-bearing wooden framework.

I am interested in what type of screws or anchors would be most suitable, whether I should use any special mounting materials, and if there are any particular precautions I need to take to safely transfer the load to the wall.

Does anyone have practical experience with attaching Platsa to wooden walls? Are there special tips for pre-drilling or distribution of fixing points? I would appreciate as specific advice as possible.

Thanks in advance!

It is best to use screws with pointed, strong wood threads, at least 6 cm (2.4 inches) long. Pre-drilling is essential to prevent the wood from splitting. Always align the fastening points with the stable beams behind the boards. Distribute the screws evenly along the top row and further down for additional support.

I completely understand why this is important to you—after all, no one wants furniture to suddenly slip off the wall. I initially felt a bit unsure too, especially with wooden walls that can be difficult to assess fully.

What helped me was carefully feeling the wall beforehand to locate the load-bearing cross beams. You definitely want to aim for those. Then, I would recommend not just blindly driving in the screws, but taking your time to feel and guide them to ensure a secure hold.

Don’t feel stressed if it doesn’t work perfectly right away; it’s normal to have to experiment a bit at first. In the end, it will be stable as long as you attach it to the beams.

For the secure installation of an Ikea PLATSA unit on wooden walls, follow these guidelines:

- Check if the wall has load-bearing wooden studs or a stable substructure.
- Mounting points must align precisely with these studs through the wall covering.
- Use wood screws with a minimum length of 6 cm (2.4 inches) and an appropriate diameter (e.g., 5 mm (0.2 inches)).
- Pre-drill holes with a drill bit slightly thinner than the screw to protect the wood and prevent splitting.
- A laser level or spirit level can be used for alignment.
- It is recommended to distribute the screws evenly along the height of the unit to better distribute the load.

Installing using only wall plugs in wooden paneling is not advisable, as the paneling alone cannot support sufficient load. If unsure, make small test holes and check the condition of the wood.

I generally agree with this, but I would add that the type of wood also matters. Not every screw type holds equally well in every kind of wood. So it would be helpful to know whether your wall is made of softwood (e.g., spruce) or hardwood (e.g., oak).

Furthermore, I think a detailed plan of the load distribution is missing. It’s not only the length of the screws that counts but also how many fixing points you use and whether the attachment is designed to avoid lever forces that could pull the screws out.

In some cases, it might make sense to install additional battens to reinforce the support surface. These can distribute the load more evenly and protect the material.

Therefore, my advice is: relying on screws alone may not be sufficient if the wall or the underlying structure is not strong enough.
