Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing the challenge of securely attaching the doors on my new Ikea Platsa wardrobe. I’m especially interested in tips on how to install the doors so that they remain stable over time, even with frequent use.
I’ve read that the supplied hinges can sometimes be tricky to adjust, and that after a while the doors may become a bit loose or no longer close properly. Are there any proven methods or even alternative fastening options to prevent this?
For context: I want to mount the Platsa doors on a room divider that needs to be fairly sturdy, as the doors will be opened and closed often. Thanks for your insights and guidance!

I have read that the supplied hinges can sometimes be a bit tricky to adjust, and after some time the doors may wobble slightly or not close perfectly anymore.Hello kuplo,
you are correct; the standard Ikea Platsa hinges are functional, but with frequent use or if the doors are somewhat heavy, loose fittings can occur.
I recommend always keeping the following points in mind when attaching the doors:
- Before installation, make sure the cabinet frame is perfectly level and square.
- Tighten the hinges firmly using a good Phillips screwdriver, but not too much to avoid damaging the metal.
- After the initial installation, always use the adjustment screws on the hinges to align the doors (adjustable in height, sideways, and detachable).
- If possible, consider using stronger or soft-close hinges as replacements (Ikea offers some alternative models with soft-close).
Regarding alternative fastenings, there are hardly any official options since Platsa is designed for the rail system with the original doors. However, sometimes adding metal brackets inside the cabinet can help stabilize the hinges.
Best regards!
Great that you bring this up, kuplo! I’ve assembled several Platsa cabinets myself and can say: with the right adjustment, the doors become really solid!
I also recommend loosely attaching the hinges before finally tightening the screws, then aligning the door. This helps prevent the door from hanging crooked right from the start.
A small tip: if the doors are a bit too loose, you can attach small felt or rubber strips inside the frame to provide some cushioning and protection. This also improves how smoothly the door closes!
Keep at it, you’ll definitely get it to work 👍

I'm especially interested in tips on how to install doors so they remain stable over time, even with frequent use.I would recommend approaching this with a bit of patience: Ikea furniture is designed like a modular system – with some experience and care, even a Platsa can be made really sturdy.
If it’s about the feel: before fully tightening the screws, check that the doors open and close smoothly without resistance. Opening and closing them 10 to 15 times and making small adjustments along the way will help you spot where fine tuning is needed.
Be careful with the screws in the wooden parts – don’t overtighten, or the wood might crack.
And yes, a bit of fun shouldn’t be missed! 😉

From my experience, soft-close hinges can wear out faster with daily, frequent use. Given their mechanical complexity, I can imagine that standard hinges are more robust and less prone to repair.
Who here has reliable long-term results, ideally from real usage scenarios?

Are these alternative hinges really that much more durable, or does Ikea just offer a convenience feature that can sometimes cause more complications?I can share some personal experience: Ikea’s soft-close hinges worked flawlessly for me for three years, even with daily use. Of course, their mechanism is a bit more delicate, but I didn’t encounter any failures.
It is important to choose hinges suitable for the weight and size of the door and to carefully follow the installation guidelines. Heavier hinges are better for larger doors.
The use of soft-close hinges is often recommended because they protect the material and mechanism by closing the door gently.
