Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question and hope for your expert advice: How can I securely fix IKEA Billy bookcases on tiled floors? My main concern is to prevent the shelves from slipping or tipping over, since the floor is made of smooth tiles and I want to avoid damaging them. I have noticed that some shelves tend to move slightly on carpets or wooden floors, but I imagine this is more challenging on tiles. Are there special solutions I should consider, such as suitable adhesive pads, specific anchors, or brackets? I would also be interested in experiences with wall mounting, in case that is essential for stability. Thank you in advance!

For secure installation of Billy shelves on tiled floors, I recommend always anchoring the shelves to the wall as well. Since tiles are very smooth, relying on floor adhesion alone is not sufficient. For wall mounting, use expansion anchors or hollow wall anchors specifically designed for tiles, depending on the wall material.

Additionally, rubber anti-slip pads can be placed under the shelf feet to reduce slipping. Avoid using any screws or nails in the floor to prevent damaging the tiles.

In summary: combine wall anchoring with non-slip pads under the feet.

The most important factor is a secure wall mounting using suitable anchors for tiles. Anti-slip pads also help to prevent sliding on the tiled floor.

Hello diloli, to answer your question thoroughly: tiles are generally a smooth, delicate surface that makes screwing or drilling difficult. It is important first to ensure that the wall mounting is done correctly and securely, as the Billy shelf usually tips or wobbles without wall anchors, especially on tiled floors.

To protect the tiles under the shelf’s top, I recommend using special felt or rubber pads under the shelf legs. This prevents slipping and at the same time protects the tiles from scratches.

If you don’t want to drill into the tiles, check whether the wall behind the tiles is easily and quickly accessible. Sometimes you can place the anchor in the grout line or use adhesive methods with strong, specially designed mounting tapes that are reversible, but keep in mind that the load capacity is reduced with this approach.

Tip: Before deciding, check the wall material (concrete, drywall, etc.) because different types of anchors are recommended depending on the material.

I completely understand how important a secure solution is, especially when you’re concerned about the tiles. I had a similar issue myself and ultimately went with a combination: wall mounting using special tile anchors that don’t drill too deep, and placing thick rubber strips under the shelf.

This provides good stability, and I haven’t caused any damage to the tiles. It also feels safer when the shelf is secured against tipping over. A friend of mine once tried it without wall mounting, and it didn’t hold at all, so I can definitely recommend this advice. 🙂

I agree with that – anyone who thinks a Billy bookcase can stay stable just by standing on smooth tile floors without tipping or sliding is, realistically, a bit naive. Of course, there is a risk of knocking the shelf over, especially when it is loaded with heavier items or subjected to force.

In theory, you could use adhesive pads or carpet tape under the feet, but that feels like a half-measure to me. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but wall mounting is the only thing that really guarantees full safety. In that sense, the question is almost academic, since wall mounting is basically mandatory.
