Hello everyone, I have a problem with securing my Billy shelves on very smooth walls, such as polished concrete or plaster surfaces without noticeable texture. My goal is to fix the shelves securely and permanently so that they do not come loose over time or cause safety cracks. Does anyone have experience with special anchors or adhesive solutions for such smooth substrates? What should I specifically consider when drilling and choosing the fasteners? Any recommendations on material combinations or step-by-step tips are welcome.

Hey, I’ve had the same problem with smooth concrete walls! My secret weapon: a combination of chemical anchors and metal anchors — that holds really firmly, and you can be sure nothing will loosen. 🙂 If you want to keep it simple, metal expansion anchors of sufficient length and a clean drill hole are enough. And very important: drill slowly to prevent cracks! Good luck!

In summary, I recommend:
1. Choose a drill bit that matches the size of the anchor, ensuring it is clean and sharp-edged.
2. Drill the hole at least 5cm (2 inches) deeper than the length of the anchor.
3. Clean the drill hole thoroughly by blowing it out.
4. Use heavy-duty anchors or metal expansion anchors on smooth walls.
5. If there is any doubt about the wall’s stability, additionally use chemical anchors.

This ensures a permanently secure and stable fastening.

I have noticed that the manufacturer’s specifications for anchors are often overlooked here. These provide precise recommendations on drill hole depth and load capacity. I am curious to know your opinions on this?

This is certainly the most effective method, but also more expensive and time-consuming than simple expansion anchors. Are there any experiences on when the extra effort is truly worthwhile?

As soon as the shelf needs to support heavy weight or in rental apartments where safety is essential, it is better to use chemical anchors. Otherwise, metal expansion anchors are often sufficient.

To answer the question quite pragmatically:

For securely mounting Billy shelves on smooth walls, I mainly recommend the following combination:
- Drill bit with a sharp tip angle and the appropriate diameter
- Thorough cleaning of the drilled hole (vacuum cleaner / blower)
- Use of metal expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors with a diameter of at least 6 mm (0.24 inches)
- If possible, use chemical anchors (epoxy or polyester resin) on smooth concrete or hard plaster surfaces

The drilling depth should correspond to the anchor length plus a 5 cm (2 inch) allowance. Under no circumstances should screws be tightened too much to avoid damaging the anchors.

I'll summarize it again in my style: If you prefer a neat and secure solution, you don’t have to struggle with smooth paint or plaster. 🙂 Use chemical anchors; they can quickly hold a heavy box on the wall, even for a Billy shelf. If you want something a bit lighter, go for metal anchors and drill carefully for a safe installation. Oh, and when drilling, keep it quiet—slow, gentle, no force. That way the wall stays intact and the shelf holds up well ;-)
