Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several IKEA Billy bookshelves in my apartment, but the walls here are made of plasterboard, also known as drywall. Since I am unsure about how to securely fix the shelves without them eventually falling or causing damage, I have the following questions: Which fasteners are best suited for Billy shelves on plasterboard walls? Is it essential to drill directly into the underlying studs, or are special anchors sufficient? And how many fixing points are recommended to safely secure the shelf to the wall?

I would appreciate any tips on the proper approach to ensure the shelves are safely mounted without compromising stability. Thank you in advance!

The best option is metal anchors with high load capacity, such as hollow wall metal anchors. If possible, you should fasten the screws into the wooden battens of the stud frame, as this provides the most secure hold. For a large Billy bookshelf, I recommend at least three attachment points: top, middle, and bottom.

Hello Luarjun,

I completely understand your concern, as drywall is not the most stable material when it comes to heavy furniture. The first important step is to locate exactly where the vertical studs in the wall are. Ideally, you should attach directly to these studs, since the drywall alone can hardly support the weight.

If you cannot position the shelves directly on the studs, I recommend using wooden dowels or heavy-duty anchors designed for hollow walls, which expand inside the wall cavity and provide good load support. Personally, I have always used multiple toggle bolts at the top and bottom of Billy shelves to prevent them from tipping or pulling away from the wall.

Also, get long screws (at least 6cm (2.4 inches)) so they can reach deep enough between the drywall and the stud. In some successful installations, securing the top of the shelves was especially important, otherwise they tended to tilt forward.

That’s true, because even if you are screwing into the studs, these anchors help distribute the load and prevent the screws from pulling out.

I hope this helps!

In addition to the previous answers: If you cannot fix directly into the stud frame, it is worthwhile to use special drywall anchors such as toggle bolts (also called wing anchors) or metal cavity anchors. These are designed to distribute the load within the cavity and provide more security than simple plastic anchors.

Furthermore, I would suggest reinforcing the shelf by attaching a back panel to the wall, especially if you are stacking multiple shelves. This prevents the frame from leaning forward.

Finally, it is always advisable to pay attention to the maximum load capacity of the anchors and to use several smaller fixings rather than just a few large ones – this way, the weight is distributed better and safety is increased.

If you can’t align the shelves exactly with the studs, I recommend wooden dowels or heavy-duty cavity anchors that spread inside the wall and can bear loads well.

I can only support this, because often the studs are simply not exactly where you want to attach the shelf.

Hello everyone,

I want to share my experience here because this topic really cost me some nerves. Securing Billy shelves to drywall can be quite tricky, especially since you don’t want to worry about them falling, particularly when children or pets are around.

At first, I only attached the shelves to the drywall using the Ikea anti-tip brackets, without paying attention to the studs. After a short time, the shelves started to wobble even with light weight, and honestly, I felt like the attachment near the screws was partially torn out.

Then I switched to metal toggle anchors that open behind the drywall. These provided significantly more security because they distribute the weight better. At the same time, I nailed or screwed angle brackets to the stud frame – this gave the best result.

I also recommend this. It helped me to install a small back panel between the shelf and the wall to prevent the shelf from pulling forward.

Another important point: be patient when measuring, drill holes exactly where the studs are, and invest a bit more effort. This way, you will have peace of mind in the long run.

I hope many people find my experience helpful here. 🙂
