Hello everyone,
I’m planning to mount my IKEA Billy shelves on a drywall, but I’m unsure how to do this securely and permanently without the shelves eventually falling down or damaging the wall. The wall is made of standard gypsum plasterboard fixed to a metal stud frame, and I want to use as strong fastening methods as possible since the shelves will be loaded with books and some weight.
What types of anchors or fasteners do you recommend for this setup? Should I pay attention to specific spacing? Are there any special heavy-duty anchors or other techniques that work particularly well?
I look forward to your tips and practical experience, and thank you in advance for the help!

Thank you for the diverse feedback!
In summary, I see that directly screwing into the metal studs is the safest option—with multiple long screws through the back panel or using shelf brackets. I will also consider the idea of completely replacing the back panel with plywood for my shelves.
It seems especially important that the load is not applied only at a single point on the drywall.
One last question for the group: Has anyone had experience using so-called Molly bolts in this application? Can such an anchor reliably support a weight of about 80–90 kg (175–198 lbs) when the shelf is fully loaded? Or are they rather counterproductive for loads of this magnitude? Thank you!
