Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the following problem: I want to set up my IKEA Billy shelves on a rather uneven tiled floor in the living room. The issue is that the tiles are uneven in some areas, causing the shelves to feel unstable, wobble, and not stand straight. My specific question is: How can I secure or level my Billy shelves on such an uneven tiled floor so that they remain stable and upright over time, without the unevenness causing any damage to the furniture? I have already considered furniture glides or small shims, but I am unsure which solutions will be truly durable and also visually acceptable. I would appreciate any practical tips or experiences!

What bothers me about the common recommendations is the constant reliance on adjustable furniture glides—as if everyone has those at home.

I’d like to pose a somewhat provocative question: Why not simply cover the tiles with special plastic sheets? Basically, a base layer that completely evens out the unevenness and holds the shelf firmly in place without additional adjustments. The advantage is that the shelf essentially stands on a flat surface.

Simple and effective, because the problem is often made more complicated than necessary when finding a solution. Of course, the sheets would need to be cut to size. Who admits that sometimes this method is faster and more reliable?

In theory, this can work, but it may cause issues with fixed tiles that lack a decoupling layer. Especially with heated floors or in small spaces, the behavior of floor coverings changes, and such additions can lead to stress cracks.

Additionally, the transition often looks unattractive when plastic sheets are placed over tiles, particularly in areas with backlighting.

The most important factor in such problematic situations – whether using furniture gliders or underlays – is always a precise analysis of the location and type of unevenness, in order to compensate effectively. Guidance, custom work, and the right materials are crucial to ensure a successful solution without causing further damage.
