Hello everyone,

I have an important question and hope to benefit from your experience: What is the best way to securely attach Malm furniture, especially the dressers and cabinets from Ikea, to the walls in rental apartments?

I understand that stability is crucial, especially for tall furniture like cabinets, to prevent accidents, even if there are no children in the household. The challenge is that rental apartments often have different types of walls – from concrete to drywall (plasterboard) to brick.

I want to avoid damaging the wall when drilling or having issues with the landlord afterward. Of course, the attachment should be secure and as reversible as possible, without leaving numerous holes.

Are there universal or particularly suitable methods and mounting materials specifically for Malm furniture? And what is the recommended approach if the wall is made of drywall (plasterboard)?

I appreciate any tips, including general recommendations on how to safely stabilize Malm furniture without damaging the apartment walls.

I always use the wall fasteners provided by Ikea, which are designed for Malm furniture. Important: choose wall plugs suitable for the wall type. For drywall panels, it’s best to use special cavity anchors. This is safe and holds well.

For securing Malm furniture to different wall types in rental apartments, I recommend the following approach:

1. Identify the wall type using a brief drill test or a wall scanner.

2. For concrete and brick walls, use traditional anchors with screws, and match the drill bit diameter to the anchor size.

3. For drywall (plasterboard), use hollow wall anchors (such as toggle bolts or molly bolts); do not use standard anchors, as they do not provide sufficient support.

4. Always use the metal brackets provided by Ikea to secure the furniture, as these are specifically designed to fit the bases and heights of Malm furniture.

5. Check that screws and anchors are strong enough—the fastening must remain secure even under stress (e.g., when opening drawers).

6. To avoid wall damage, it’s advisable to properly fill and clean the holes with suitable filler after removing the furniture and upon moving out.

In general, there is no substitute for proper fastening to prevent tipping, especially with tall furniture.

I have children myself and understand how important safety is when it comes to furniture like Malm dressers. That’s why I’ve researched installation methods in rental apartments thoroughly.

One point upfront: The wall fasteners included by Ikea are designed for secure mounting. However, they should only be fixed to the wall using suitable anchors—otherwise, they won’t be effective.

If you have drywall (also known as plasterboard or gypsum board), use hollow wall anchors that expand inside the panel and distribute the load over a large area. This is much more stable than regular anchors. This method helps prevent cracks and damage to the wall.

If your apartment has solid walls (e.g., concrete or brick), drill with an appropriate hammer drill and use heavy-duty anchors. Make sure to attach the furniture level and securely.

A tip: If you don’t want or aren’t allowed to drill holes, you can consider clamps or tension straps to fix furniture against walls, but these are usually only temporary solutions.

I always talked with the landlord, especially when drill permission was granted. It’s important that all measures are documented and can be reversed later.

Hey LUCLINTON4,

"Are there universal or particularly suitable methods or fasteners specifically for Malm furniture?" – Yes, there are, and they’re really practical! 🙂

I was initially quite concerned about mounting on drywall, but with the right cavity anchors, it worked perfectly. The fastening kits provided by Ikea are great, but depending on the wall, choosing the right anchors is crucial.

That sums it up exactly – no regular anchors, otherwise the furniture might eventually fall over. 😉

One more tip: Make sure the top bracket is mounted on the back of Malm furniture for added stability. If you ask your landlord for permission, explain that you want to securely fasten the furniture – they are often okay with it if you fill the holes afterward.

I really appreciated feeling relatively safe without constantly worrying about unstable furniture. Good luck!
