Hello everyone, I have a rather specific question: How can I effectively secure my IKEA Malm furniture against damage from earthquakes or severe vibrations?
I’m not just looking for simple fastening methods, but a permanent, secure, and as space-friendly as possible solution that can withstand stronger movements.
Unfortunately, the Malm dressers are quite bulky and tend to tip over easily during sudden movements, which can be dangerous.
Does anyone have experience with suitable methods or products to prevent Malm furniture from falling or getting damaged during ground shaking? Are there specific brackets that are easy to install? Are additional base anchors advisable?
Thanks for your insights!

Hello, I would like to add a few points:
First: Installing the original IKEA wall anchors for Malm dressers is relatively straightforward and generally serves its purpose, especially when they are properly screwed into load-bearing walls (e.g., masonry).
Second: If the wall is drywall or similar, additional reinforcements should be installed there, or an alternative solution should be considered.
Third: If strong earthquakes are expected, additional floor anchoring points can be helpful. These are usually screwed to the inside of the furniture using metal brackets and then secured to the floor. It is important that both the floor and the furniture structure can support the load.
Finally: Always store heavy items as low as possible to keep the center of gravity low. This helps reduce the risk of tipping during vibrations.
If you have any questions or need help with installation, feel free to ask.

I’m more interested in how reliable the wall anchors offered by IKEA really are.Good question, I’ve wondered about that myself.
Does anyone have direct experience or perhaps alternative recommendations if suitable masonry anchors can’t be used? Unfortunately, my living room walls are drywall only, so I’m unsure how well the mounts will hold there.

If the wall is just drywall or similar, you should either install additional reinforcements or consider a different solution. What options would you recommend for such walls?
I’d appreciate any practical suggestions.
