Hello everyone, I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA in use, such as dressers and drawer units. Recently, I read that these pieces can tip over easily due to their height and design, so I am concerned about safety, especially since there are small children in the household. My question is: What is the most effective way to secure my Malm furniture against tipping? Are there specific mounting kits, installation tips, or recommended products that provide reliable stabilization? I am particularly interested in experiences that go beyond the standard safety kit solutions and include other options or improvements. Thanks in advance for your help!

Following the very helpful tips so far, I would like to add: Most Malm furniture comes with the included furniture straps, but especially in rental apartments where drilling into walls is not allowed, this can be difficult.

If you cannot use wall anchors, consider furniture safety products that secure the furniture itself, such as non-slip mats under the feet, sturdy adhesive floor corners, or self-adhesive, non-slip pads.

Of course, these measures are only a supplement and not a replacement for wall anchoring. However, with small children, a non-slip solution can provide additional safety if needed.

If you need a more detailed guide, I can provide one.

Thank you for the many responses and tips so far! I especially appreciate the clear instructions from klo40 and the suggestions for alternative strap solutions from PECLARISSA.

I have a specific question: My MALM dresser is placed against a drywall partition, where only wooden studs are spaced at certain intervals behind it. What is the safest way to secure it? Can I safely fasten it using the IKEA kits, or are special anchors recommended? Which anchors are best suited here to ensure the attachment is truly secure? Also, what about the positioning—should I fasten directly into the wooden studs, or is anchoring into the drywall (plasterboard) sufficient?

Thanks in advance for any further advice!

In your case, it is definitely advisable to fasten the screws into the wooden studs. Drywall panels have very little load-bearing capacity and cannot provide the required stability.

It is best to use long wood screws that penetrate deeply into the studs. If the furniture's position does not align exactly with a stud, a slight adjustment can help reach a stud for screwing. Alternatively, special toggle anchors designed for reinforcement in drywall can be used, although they offer less load capacity compared to the wooden studs.

Important: Before installation, use a stud finder or wall scanner to precisely locate the wooden studs. This is the only way to ensure a secure anchor.

In summary: attach the MALM furniture to the wooden studs, not just the drywall panel.

To conclude the question: For drywall partitions, hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts are most suitable if you cannot screw into the stud. They expand behind the panel and provide good support. Nevertheless, fastening into a wooden stud is more stable and preferable.
