Hello everyone, I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA in use, such as dressers and drawer units. Recently, I read that these pieces can tip over easily due to their height and design, so I am concerned about safety, especially since there are small children in the household. My question is: What is the most effective way to secure my Malm furniture against tipping? Are there specific mounting kits, installation tips, or recommended products that provide reliable stabilization? I am particularly interested in experiences that go beyond the standard safety kit solutions and include other options or improvements. Thanks in advance for your help!
To secure MALM furniture against tipping, IKEA recommends using the included wall fasteners, which are specifically designed for these pieces. These fasteners typically consist of metal brackets and screws that anchor both the furniture and the wall.
It is important to check the wall structure before installation (e.g., concrete, wood studs, drywall) and use appropriate anchors. Special cavity or toggle anchors are required for drywall.
Alternatively, some suppliers offer universal anti-tip furniture straps that work with straps or clamp systems. However, securing the furniture to the wall remains the safest method, as it maximizes stability against tipping.
Additionally, lower drawers should not be overloaded, and heavy items are best stored in the bottom drawers to keep the center of gravity low.

They work like webbing straps and are pretty easy to install. They’re perfect if you don’t want to drill or if you live in a rental where you can’t make holes in the wall.
That’s true, of course, but it’s not always possible or desirable for everyone. So if you’re just looking for a quick solution, try those strap systems that also come with adhesive strips. 🙂

It’s best to always secure MALM furniture with the included wall fastening kit.

To add to the previous answers: For older MALM furniture without a fastening kit, it is possible to purchase special anti-tip safety kits on the market that can be installed flexibly. These usually consist of sturdy metal brackets and straps, which are secured both to the back of the furniture and to the wall. Additionally, the furniture should be checked for stability, and care should be taken to ensure it is not placed on low-traction carpets.
Hello Moko39, I want to share a simple step-by-step guide on how to effectively secure your MALM furniture against tipping – this will help you avoid many common mistakes:
1. Choose the position: Place the furniture against a stable wall, not a loose drywall without studs.
2. Prepare wall attachment: Use the IKEA fixing kit or a replacement kit with appropriate anchors (for concrete, wood studs, or drywall). First, check with a stud finder to locate the wall studs.
3. Prepare the furniture: Clean the back of the furniture at the attachment point from dust and grease.
4. Attach the bracket: First, screw the bracket or angle to the piece of furniture.
5. Fix the bracket to the wall: Use suitable anchors and screws, not too short.
6. Final check: Test the stability and tighten screws if needed.
7. Additional tips: Avoid storing heavy items on top, as this lowers the center of gravity significantly.
Avoid adhesive solutions without mechanical anchoring as your main securing method, as these often do not hold permanently. However, adhesive strips and straps can be used as additional safety measures.
I hope this guide helps you.
