KeolewisHello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of safely assembling and installing several Ikea Metod kitchen or storage cabinets, but I have very limited space available. My question is: What basic and specific measures should I take to build the cabinets stable and secure without much surrounding room to work with? I am particularly interested in tips for wall mounting, aligning cabinets in rows and corners, as well as handling during temporary storage or relocating them during assembly. Are there any special tricks for managing Metod cabinets in small spaces, such as for standing them up, securing them against tipping, or screwing techniques? Since I don’t have an expert on site, I would also appreciate recommendations for tools or aids that are especially effective in this situation. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hello Keolewis, your topic is really important, especially when working with limited space, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I can very much understand how stressful that can be.
I have personally assembled Metod cabinets in a small room before and noticed that you need to pay close attention to wall mounting to avoid safety risks. It is important to securely screw each cabinet individually to the wall before connecting them together.
That was also my key question. Additionally, I can recommend measuring and planning the room well beforehand, ideally with a sketch, to go through the assembly step by step. I also find taking sufficient breaks during the work important to avoid mistakes caused by rushing.
How about you—do you already have a detailed sketch or measurements you could share?

Hello Keolewis and Elias, I’d like to go into a bit more detail here because installing Metod cabinets in tight spaces does present some technical challenges.
First: wall mounting is essential – Ikea usually provides suitable plugs and screws for this, but for drywall or similar materials, you should upgrade to appropriate heavy-duty anchors. It’s best to use a spirit level and a laser level to ensure everything is perfectly aligned.
For handling installation in a small room, I recommend the following approach:
- Plan the assembly so that you mount the heaviest cabinets individually and secure them directly to the wall.
- Only connect the modules together after they are securely wall-mounted to prevent tipping hazards.
- Use the special connectors from the Metod series for corner cabinets, as they add extra stability.
- If the space is really tight, it can be helpful to install the shelves and doors only after the main assembly is complete.
- Keep tools like a cordless drill with torque control and suitable extensions close at hand.
- Keep in mind it’s best to install the cabinets with two people—one holds, the other screws.
Regarding fastening methods: Ikea uses cam locks and dowels; make sure these fasteners are fully inserted and tightened.
If you like, you can share some room measurements, and I can provide more specific advice.

Especially when working with limited space, you should not underestimate the stability. I also recommend reinforcing the wall mounting with a support board screwed vertically onto the wall. This helps distribute the load better and prevents the cabinets from wobbling later.
To handle the work with limited space, using a foldable workshop stool or a small dolly can also assist in safely lifting and positioning the modules.
And very important: besides a screwdriver function, always use a cordless drill with adjustable torque to avoid over-tightening and ensure a secure connection.
